Former Scotland, Manchester United and Manchester City striker Denis Law - the only Scottish player to have won the Ballon d'Or - has died at the age of 84.

The man dubbed 'The King' and 'The Lawman' spent 11 years at Old Trafford, his 237 goals in 404 appearances placing him third in United's history behind Wayne Rooney and Bobby Charlton.

Born in Aberdeen, Law began his career with Huddersfield Town, also had a spell in Italy with Torino and was capped 55 times for his country - his 30 goals making him Scotland's joint top scorer of all time.

Really sad news, never saw him play and never met the great man but you can see from videos on X and YouTube just how much he loved Town. Dig out your copy of our End of an Era video/DVD and give it a watch.

Hopefully we will organise a proper tribute when we play Bolton next week.

I think Huddersfield take great credit for seeing his potential and investing in him. He grew up in huge poverty in the north east of Scotland, real barefoot to school kind of upbringing. He also had a serious eye condition until Huddersfield paid for his operation.

Even towns manager at the time (who I think was from Aberdeen) said he was the least likely footballer he'd ever seen !!

Two Scottish legends looking after him in Huddersfield. Andy Beattie, then Bill Shankly. And it was Beattie's brother who was our scout, that spotted him in the first place.

I'm not sure when the old fella first took me to Leeds Road, then again he took us everywhere he could from Burnley to Leeds and everywhere in between, so if I ever saw him play for us I sure as hell don't recall it, but for some reason, even though I wasn't a Blue Manc fan or Red Manc fan, if and when I scored a goal in my junior school days, my cuffs or jumper sleeves were always pulled down over my hands and I raised an arm with and index finger sticking out in celebration.

When he read the eulogy at George Best's funeral, hs first line, as he looked at the coffin, was along the lines of "I wouldn't have been surprised if he didn't turn up today". A sense of humour that took him through all the good times and the recent bad times that were to follow for himself. Whilst Jimmy Greaves was the master of passing the ball into the back of the net from the edge of the box inwards, this guy was more often than not sticking a toe out or his head on anything in the six yard box, going where others feared to tread (or head). The supreme sniper let alone striker.

Loved that back heel that relegated United though, even though he could have stepped over it. I reckon that was an fy to Docherty for letting him go when he clearly still had it.
