thats the thing though Theo , it doesnt work everywhere else does it, and even if everywhere else its get you an interview they dont see the color of your skin until you walk in the door, its different with professional sport, everyone already knows who you are. whether we want to admit it or not institutional racism is rife, the negative stereotypes attached to coloured skin are ingrained in society, and we have ALL been guilty of it at some point even if its unintentional ( and yes i'm not proud of it but i include myself in that)
we can talk how much about how "positive" discrimination is wrong and that the best person should get the job regardless of race ....yeah great, unfortunately most of the people who hand out the jobs dont think like that intentionally or unintentionally , so until there is a fundamental shift is societies thinking we need things like the rooney rule to ensure a certain degree of equality
because honestly if it isnt forced it will NEVER happen and attitudes wont change, lets not forget 100 years ago it was a commonly held belief among the powers that be that women should not get to vote because they were not the best people to do it. women having the vote had to be forced into existence and we now look back at that level of thinking with disgust and rightly so.

Could not have said it better myself theo. You see on the news in america the great furore over the existence of 'white privilege' and right wing nutjobs like Bill O'Reilly denying it exists when nothing could be further from the truth. This is EXACTLY the same thing. People saying 'oh it shouldn't exist because everyone gets a fair crack of the whip' is just a delusional argument. You're saying that because you're white! Of course you are going to think if you have the experience everyone will get a fair crack at a job. It does not work like that, there is still huge amounts of racism in football, particularly amongst the old guard of 'traditional' dave bassett type managers we have in this country, too many if you ask me and black managers are not being given the time of day until we force this rule change. Then maybe we can use that argument everyone's using of the person who's best qualified should get the job because at the moment, that isn't true.

but when the people deciding who the "best" person is are , intentionally or unintentionally, institutionally racist then not everyone is getting treated fairly

its like the old saying goes
only the insane have the strength enough to prosper, only those who prosper can truly judge whats sane.

I find it amusing how many so called coaches are given top managers jobs (doesn't matter what colour they are) who have barely passed the minimum coaching badges and qualifications let alone the top one's. There always seems to be a slack handful even in the Prima Donna League that are still trying to get their FIFA badge. It might cost a few bob to get qualified (allowed against tax surely) but what the (can't use this bad word but starts with f and rhymes with duck) are these guys doing in the afternoons when they are players?

I got my qualifications by working 4 days a week and going to college in the next West Yorkshire towns and cities by bus and train for one whole 12 hour day and 1 or 2 evening 3-4 hour sessions then doing my homework on other evenings or weekends between watching Town and wandering down to Thrum Hall to watch the rugby (and the odd Saturday night speedway session down the Shay). Is that too hard a path to follow for so called professional guys that do 4 hour days at most and want to teach other guys how to kick a bag of wind around when they retire these days? There's so much stuff on-line these days they probably won't even need to travel to a college to do the course work.

Don't care what your colour or your sex is, if you've got the badges or certificates and maybe some of the experience then you can apply for the job. If you haven't got the first two at least as a minimum, why not? You can't expect an interview just because you applied for the job. If your CV looks good enough, you will probably get an interview. Up to you from there on in. Seems to work OK every where else without any obvious Rooney rule (except Government type jobs that for some reason are definitely based on quota's).

Ah yes....Thrum Hall to watch Halifax (I used to play for the Colts), and then down to the Shay for the speedway (massive Chris Pusey fan). Fantastic days Theo!!!!!

The shale shifters never lived up to the team of 66 sadly. Never could fit Dave Young husband into that thumbnail space in the programme as a rider replacement either, then again I was a long way off being a teenager in those days Shep
We are well off topic now but Easter Monday lunch time was Belle Vue, 3 pm was Leeds Road and 7:30 was the return speedway fix v Belle Vue down the Shay. Skint for the rest of the month.
