Chris Powell calls for the Rooney Rule - Amelia Chaffinch - 07-09-2014
Chris Powell says there aren't enough black managers in the game. He is currently the only one in the English leagues. Whilst that's probably true, I don't like the idea of quotas. Wherever they have been involved in my working life, it has just meant positive discrimination, whether it be when they decided there weren't enough women managers or ethnic minorities in executive grades. It led to fast-tracking and the right people weren't chosen. Plus he's making an issue of it and I don't like that. Peter Herbert and the like don't do anybody any favours and I don't want Powell to make this his band wagon. I want him to manage our team well.

Somebody's skin colour is irrelevant. It's the ability that counts. Chris Powell got the job at Huddersfield because he was the best out of all the candidates, not because he was black.
Positive discrimination is wrong. Racism is wrong. Putting people into colour categories is racist. The people conducting this survey are racist.
People are people, as Depeche Mode taught us back in the 80s.

Good God!!! I do hope this is not going to be a regular rant from our new manager, who actually got the job 'cause he stood out from the crowd. And not because he is black. I am no racist, and anybody who accuses me of being so, will get a hefty clip around their ear'ole, regardless of whether they are black, white, orange or even bloody mauve!!! Of coarse there will be some racism in football, as there is in every other walk of life, but please come up with a far more concise list of black managerial candidates who would stand out from the rest, to highlight the issue. The names mentioned in the article, apart from Houghton, who I would imagine we also considered, would not reach the interview room door for me. And that would not be because they were black either. Think I'll apply for the next managerial position that becomes available. And when I don't get it, which I wouldn't, I'll claim "Short Fat Hairy Arse ism". Though I suppose that wouldn't be a small enough minority! Rant well and truly over!

The Rooney rule is often mis represented, and often by the gutter press. it does not say that there must be quotas for minority managers all it states is that if a minority candidate applies for a senior management or coaching job a certain percentage of them must be interviewed , in no way does it say that any of them should be hired , just interviewed.
and if you read the article ,Powell does not say that english football should have the Rooney rule , he just says that the FA should be doing more to help minority coaches.
this is also not a new stance for him , hes been heavily involved in the kick it out campaign for a very long time its just the news people are now reporting on it because hes got a managers job again
and i think he has a right to make an issue of it because racism is a huge issue in football right now where the authorities are doing very little to curb it. its ok to say " well racism will happen " yes it will but it shouldn't and maybe the list of black managers is underwhelming because many very good candidates who could have done very well have not been given chances they have earned because they are black
i am far from a fan of positive discrimination and sometimes it backfires in horrible ways but unfortunately institutional racism is so ingrained in society that it is a necessary evil, without it there would be almost no opportunities for minorities, let not forget the only reason Powell has a job now it because Robins walked off the job, if we'd have had a half decent start to the season Powell would still be unemployed

As MNT said, the Rooney Rule in the NFL requires teams to interview a minority candidate for every coaching job they have available. The candidates that are interview in American Football are announced as well by all teams, so there is not the secrecy around appointments like you see in football. It does not mean any quota regarding hiring has to be met, it is just the interview, and the idea is that it gives minority coaches the opportunity to impress during an interview when otherwise they would not even get that chance.
Having said all that I am not sure how successful it is deemed to be!!
