England generally not being good enough is certainly a large part of the problem, but Root's captaincy has never really offered any hope that any of the players around him are going to get better. He's a Nice Guy without any shadow of a doubt, and I'm sure he's widely liked and respected for that, but the fact is that Nice Guys seldom make for great leaders.
Correct decision all in all. But it remains to be seen whether Stokes - the only realistic replacement - is going to be any better.
