Joe uprooted - steps down as test captain - Lord Snooty - 15-04-2022 Joe Root steps down as England Test captain following West Indies defeat https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/cricket/60895801 Quote:Joe Root has stepped down as England Test captain following his side's series defeat against West Indies. RE: Joe uprooted - steps down as test captain - ritchiebaby - 15-04-2022 The England Test captaincy has often been seen as a poisoned chalice, but not as far as Root is concerned. His personal form has been excellent during that time and surely must be retained as the top batsman. We never know what's going on in the background, but we do know that many of the better players around have never kept up any good form on a consistent basis. Is it Root to blame or is it something else in the camp? Is it just the fact that England are not good enough? RE: Joe uprooted - steps down as test captain - Ska'dForLife-WBA - 15-04-2022 England generally not being good enough is certainly a large part of the problem, but Root's captaincy has never really offered any hope that any of the players around him are going to get better. He's a Nice Guy without any shadow of a doubt, and I'm sure he's widely liked and respected for that, but the fact is that Nice Guys seldom make for great leaders. Correct decision all in all. But it remains to be seen whether Stokes - the only realistic replacement - is going to be any better. RE: Joe uprooted - steps down as test captain - Lord Snooty - 15-04-2022 I've not watched much test cricket recently, so can't really comment. But I will anyway. Give Broad or Anderson the job. They always seemed to know best. RE: Joe uprooted - steps down as test captain - Ska'dForLife-WBA - 15-04-2022 Although we all know he's not a Test cricketer, I said during the Ashes that England could do worse than to just bring Eoin Morgan into the fold for a few months. He'll be a walking wicket, but half of our batsmen are anyway. Let him instil some discipline and show a bit of leadership on the field, and any runs he adds are a bonus. Won't happen, but good call. RE: Joe uprooted - steps down as test captain - Ska'dForLife-WBA - 28-04-2022 Ben Stokes officially appointed captain. |
