Why do people watch sport? An actor called Robert Morley (I think)
once stated that he never watched or took part in any form of sport
as he considered it all a, literal, waste of time. With a history of
spending hundreds of hours chasing a ball, throwing things and jumping
over things in all sorts of weathers and ending up with knackered
joints, I think I see what he meant. I came to spectating late and with
an expectation of somehow reliving the thrill by watching others. The
truth is it isn’t the same. Once you have seen a thousand goals; five
thousand goals, another half dozen doesn’t seem to matter all that
much. I understand youngsters still having enthusiasm but I find I
watch sport and often wonder, why? …particularly The Premiership!
I think it would make the game far more interesting if we had random
celebrity refs..say 5 out of every 20 games to be officiated by rejects
from Bake Off or Strictly. Think of the decisions! Think of the
controversy! Think of the riots and lynchings!
