Obviously only time will tell, but do you think this new format will help the clubs in so much as it means pre-season is almost replaced with competitive games instead?? While the games have been relatively easy, I wonder if the fact they "mean" something may get you into the swing of league games earlier than normal.

A proper series of friendlies would have been more beneficial in many ways. It would even have been better if we'd started with East Stirlingshire and worked our way up to Motherwell. As it was we had a tough game to begin with but then weren't pushed much in the other 3, so it won't do much for our league-readiness. The other problem is you can only make 3 changes in official cup games so we couldn't get as good coverage of the whole squad over the games.

I actually mooted a version of the league cup with a similar format a few years ago, but that was with a view to expanding the top flight. That would have means fewer league games, but it could be compensated for by introducing this group stage. The way it's been done just means we have to squeeze more games into an already tight schedule in the opening weeks.
