A Thursday is a strange day, being difficult for people to get there, whereas a Saturday matchday at say 1PM would have seen thousands turn out, whether they were going to the game after or not.

What can I say. I idolised the bloke and can still say that I idolise him today I could listen to him talk about the Albion for hours you can hear his undying passion for the club, his love of our club is only equalled by ourselves.

Who can forget the tongue sticking out of the side of the mouth and the goals that he scored. My personal favourite was one of the 2 he got against Valencia at the shrine in the old EUFA cup.

The word legend is much overused today and a lot of the time not deserved, but Bomber defines the word legend for the Albion, we will never see his like again and the records he set will never be broken.

Yes if he'd played for a "bigger" club he'd have won a shed load of caps, but I truly believe he wouldn't swap any of his time with us for a 100 England caps. He always says it was a privilege to pull on the Baggies shirt, whereas I like to think we were the privileged ones and the "bigger" clubs loss was our gain.

My admiration for Bomber as a player, as a man and as a fellow supporter is endless.

What would he be worth nowadays in his prime - priceless, and I still think he'd want to play for the Albion Thumb up

You'll probably have seen it but the official site is doing a 3 (I think) part series on The Bomber - here's today's edition:

http://www.wba.co.uk/news/article/the-to...61371.aspx

It includes perhaps my favourite Bomber goal at 2:22 - pretty sure it was in the surprise FA Cup defeat against Sheffield Wednesday in about 1970. What incredible technique!
Well worth a view Thumb up

I would recommend watching them on the clubs YouTube channel ,they load better and I think the quality is better to, though that may just be the loading speed.

Drewks,
We were right in front of that goal (on Leppings Lane). It was the 1st game of the 70s, and followed our 68 triumph and 69 semi (same ground), so we were very disappointed with the result. But to see THAT goal was worth all the disappointment! It came from nowhere - no foreplay, no build-up, just whoooosh! I remember that Jack Whitham got Wednesday's 2 winning goals - he went on to an anonymous career with Liverpool soon afterwards.
I stored that goal as "my best ever", but years and years later I heard Bobby Charlton describe it as the best goal he ever saw - praise from Caesar!!! It's been bettered since, as players' technique has improved 10-fold in the past 20 years, but I automatically bring that one up when the "best goal" subject is brought up.
Ecstasy!

Nice one, talksaft!!  Thumb up
Remember the disappointment myself.....it was as if we just could NEVER handle the pressure of occasionally being favourites. Oh how times have changed  Doh

Regarding the goal and you saying about techniques having improved, I think the weight, balance and trajectory (is that right?) of today's ball has enabled lesser players to control and hit it better but in THOSE days only a player with a rare talent - Bomber, Bobby Charlton, Peter Lorimer come to mind - could time it as exquisitely as that!  Rolleyes
Ah.....those were the days!!  Angel
