Charlton Athletic have signed centre-back Eoghan O'Connell on a free transfer after he rejected a new contract at League Two side Rochdale.
The 26-year-old has signed a three-year deal and is Ben Garner's first signing since taking over as manager.
The Irishman was Dale's supporter's and player's Player of the Year last season having played 131 games in three years.
The ex-Republic of Ireland youth player previously spent two years at Bury having begun his career at Celtic.
"Eoghan's a player that I've admired for a long time and it was nice that when I came in he also featured high on the club's recruitment list," Garner told the Charlton website.
"In possession he's fantastic, he's very intelligent, comfortable receiving the ball, very brave, which is a big quality, and he has a fantastic range of pass. In addition to that, he's also a great defender."

Charlton Athletic have signed right-back Mandela Egbo on a two-year deal after his contract expired at Swindon Town at the end of the season.
Egbo, 24, follows new Addicks manager Ben Garner who also left the Robins for the League One club this month.
The pair also worked together when Egbo was at Crystal Palace's academy.
The defender was out of contract when he joined Swindon in March on a deal until the end of the season, and went on to make 11 appearances.
Egbo previously spent four years playing in Germany for Borussia Monchengladbach and Darmstadt 98, before joining New York Red Bulls in the MLS in 2020.
His new contract at Charlton also includes the option of a third year.
"I've known Mandela since he was 11 years old from academy football. He came and played for me at Swindon at the end of last season and did really well," said Charlton manager Ben Garnder.
"He's experienced for his age and he's got the attributes that we want in that position. He's a fantastic character with a great personality, very driven, a great athlete and a really talented footballer."

The 25-year-old joins as a free agent after his contract expired at Swindon where he made 39 appearances last season and helped them to the League Two play-offs.
Wollacott is Charlton's third signing of the week after centre-half Eoghan O'Connell and full-back Mandela Egbo.

His arrival followed the departure of first-team coach Jason Euell earlier on Thursday.

The 26-year-old joined Lincoln in 2020 from MK Dons and made 79 appearances for the League One Imps.
McGrandles regularly captained Lincoln during his time with the club.
"The manager has told me about his style of play, the way he wants to go about things and it suits me down to the ground," McGrandles said.
"I want to be in a team that moves the ball and attacks, and ultimately enjoys playing football."

Charlton Athletic have signed defender Steven Sessegnon on a season-long loan from Fulham.
The 22-year-old can play at both right-back and left-back, as well as across the midfield.
Twin brother of Tottenham left-back Ryan, Sessegnon played 10 games on loan at Plymouth Argyle in League One last season.
He has played 19 matches for the Cottagers since making his debut in 2017.
"Speaking to the manager about the way he wants to play and how positive his message was really sold it for me," Sessegnon told the club website.
"He wants to be attacking, he wants to go at teams and not just sit back, and that suits me very nicely. It was an easy choice."

Charlton Athletic have signed defender Terell Thomas on a permanent deal.
The St Lucian international, 26, becomes the eighth arrival at the Valley this summer.
The one-time Addicks youngster said: "I'm really pleased to be back. I feel like I've got a lot of unfinished business here."
Thomas finished last season at Championship side Reading but previously played for Wigan, AFC Wimbledon and Crewe Alexandra.
The former Arsenal youngster, who switched to join Charlton's academy, follows Eoghan O'Connell, Mandela Egbo, Joe Wollacott, Conor McGrandles, Steven Sessegnon, Jack Payne and Jes Rak-Sakyi in joining Ben Garner's squad this summer.
Thomas has signed a one-year contract subject to EFL approval and said: "When I was in the academy my dream was to break into the first team and now I have that opportunity so I'm very excited."
Garner added: "Terell joins us to provide greater depth and competition in the centre-back position. He has trained with us for the last three weeks so is already integrated with the squad.
"Being a former academy player he knows the club well. Terell has good experience playing from League Two through to the Championship and we are very pleased to welcome him into the squad."

League One side Charlton Athletic have re-signed Macauley Bonne and brought in Coventry full-back Todd Kane on loan.
Zimbabwe striker Bonne was a free agent after his deal at Queens Park Rangers was terminated earlier this month.
The 27-year-old featured nine times for the R's this season, having spent the 2021-22 campaign on loan at Ipswich.
Former Chelsea trainee Kane, 29, joined the Sky Blues from QPR in 2021, and he and Bonne move to The Valley until the end of the season.
Bonne previously played for the Addicks between August 2019 and September 2020, scoring 11 goals in 40 appearances before his switch to QPR.
"This club changed my life. I came from playing non-league to the Championship," he told the Charlton website.
"I am back here now to pick up from where I left off - scoring goals, making people and myself happy in football and that is very important."
Kane is also eager for game-time after making 10 appearances for Coventry this season.
"For me, it was most important to play games and come somewhere where I feel I was wanted and I can help the team," he said.
"I'm really looking forward to it and I can't wait to get started."
