Who's the Greatest Olympian of All Time?
#1
Or the GOAT as they were calling it on 5Live. Rolleyes

This was the question posed after Michael Phelps got his 21st gold medal the other night.

Well obviously he's up there, but every Olympics he gets multiple opportunities to win medals as the swimmers get loads of different events to do. Unlike our very own Sir Steve Redgrave, five Olympics, five gold medals.

But there is another argument, that of history and icons of the Games. And in that vein, we can't overlook the one and only Jesse Owens. He only went to one Games but won four gold medals, in front of that little twerp Adolf Hitler.

So who would you say was the GOAT?

I would have to say it was Redgrave for the reasons you put. He only had one medal opportunity WA h games and won 5 Golds in 5 olympics. Phelps record is phenomenal, but Redgrave just ahead for me.

So has Usain Bolt done enough to be added to the list?

Bolt definitely well up there among the elite and he's some character as well as a top world champion sprinter!

Bolt has to be in the conversation, especially if he can win the 200m and relay as well to make it 9 golds across 3 Olympics.

He's definitely the most famous. If their photos were on Pointless I reckon Bolt would be in the 90% bracket, whereas Phelps would be around 50.
This'll probably be lost on you SCO. Big Grin

Right, here I go being controversial again and I know I will be inviting everyone to have a pop at me! However, here goes. Why does everyone twitter on about Usain Bolt being the greatest Olympian? Yes, he's fantastic and he has achieved much but, surely, we have got to admire endurance athletes more? The likes of Mo Farah, Bradley Wiggins, Steve Redgrave, Jess Ennis. How they have the cheek to behave like they're knackered after running a few 100m races amazes me. I know they put in a lot of training in the 4 years in between but, come on, get real! The other day the 3 heptathlon medallists had a selfie with Usain Bolt, like he was the hero. He should have been bowing down to all the heptathletes, even the one that came last!

And, as an add on, look at the effort Andy Murray and Del Potro put in FIGHTING for a gold medal. Now, that was a real contest.

And don't forget those triathlonists. You see the Brownlee boys interviewed a minute after they've just swum, cycled and run a hundred miles and they're barely out of breath. Bolt and his mates can barely speak after a quick jog down a length of the main stand. Big Grin
