England's tour of South Africa
#11
bit late but, england close on 179-4 with rain affecting the days play as well as the fear of lightening and bad light.

cook out first, caught at slip, well more a case of him giving catching practice. he had no foot movement, but the south africans showed that they had a plan when it came to bowling to him, putting it on the 4/5 stump and threatening to bring it back into him. even cook was going to feel at one at somepoint.

hales was doing okay, looking to cover the ball that came back into his stumps whilst also looking to be positive, but that resulted in him chasing one outside off stump before he had properly settled down, also no foot movement let him down. steyn picking up both wickets and in the early overs he looked very dangerous and quicker than what was coming up on the speed gun.

compton and root rebuilt for a little while with compton being dogged and not letting his wicket go cheaply, probably what we have needed since trott suffered his unfortunate problems. he dealt with a couple of jaffers but did well to miss them where others would have snicked it. root was his usual self trying to take the game back to them and also dealt with good deliveries but was largley untroubled until he went back to dane piedt's first ball, which did turn a little but left root lbw with the ball clipping the top of middle.

taylor has a very fidgety style at the crease but it worked as he and compton dropped anchor and rebuilt the innings, taylor made up for the last time he played the proteas and today his style nullified the spin and any movement the pacers got. he looked set in my opinion and well placed to reach the end of play, however, steyn got one to move and taylor followed it and gave an easy catch behind.

england go into tomorrow with ben stokes and compton at the crease and in all fairness, if stokes gets his eye in on this wicket then it could be another lords event. pitch is playing well and the carry is looking very good. cant help but think that england are lacking a pure pace man in general, plunkett isnt there nor is wood, but they are neither a morkel or steyn, even abbott was clocking mid 140's. finn could reach that but he seems to have settled for a 135-137 average which is fair enough if it works for him, but again we dont have anyone that can push a batter back with shear pace, bounce yes, pace no. then again our pitches dont suit that bowling so maybe the new rules may change that....

be interesting to see how our bowlers go on this wicket still, broad may enjoy it as it offers a bit of movement, woakes may also prove useful if he bowls like he does in the county games. i think the wicket will continue to offer something for all the bowlers. all in all this is a wicket that test cricket and cricket in general should be played on

Pitch is turning a bit now and has slowed down a fair bit too. Thought it would play better than this after day one, but maybe the weather has had an impact on that.

Dane piedt looks a handy spinner for them, also steyn remover has picked up a shoulder injury

All over, a great start to the series but a much bigger challenge in Cape Town.

Cape town has long been south africa's strong hold, they always seem to play well, or more to the point other teams dont play well there.

there should be a lot of england supporters there for the test, it is a great place to go for cricket and has everything a supporter would like when visiting a country.

south africa are set to make a couple of changes, dale steyn is ruled out with kagiso rabada taking his place. rabada is young fast bowler who will cause england problems with his pace. the other year he was playing in the under 19 world cup and clocking mid 80's, now he is bowling quicker and also with more maturity as he was given the last over in some of the odi's when south africa played india. he's still relatively new to the test arena so it would be an idea to get on top of him from the off and not let him settle and gain confidence.

another change is quinton de kock set to take the gloves, mainly due to abdv not really wanting that burden any more. qdk scored a 100 in the last 4 day state game and will be in line to replace one of bavuma, jp duminey or maybe even faf du plessis.

a final change may come in the form of hardus viljoen who will replace kyle abbott should abbott fail a fitness test. viljoen was clocked bowling over 150kph during the ram slam and appears to be a combative bowler. however, he did play for south africa a against england at the start of the tour and england may already know how to play him.

england on the other hand look set to make just the one change with james anderson replacing chris woakes. england have 17 tests apparently this year and anderson could well be approaching the 500 wicket club providing his fitness holds up. one thing worth noting is that a lot of these are on the subcontinent once again with england facing bangladesh and india next winter.

very good day one for england overall.

cook won the toss and decided to bat first, he was the first wicket to fall for 27, half hearted drive to rabada with morris taking a great one handed diving catch in third slip on debut.

hales and compton continued with compton playing a few uncharacteristic shots after the lunch interval. hales managed to get past 50, playing a more restrait and watchful innings, but he was caught by ab de villiers in slip off morkel. compton fell just before tea off the bowling of rabada, being caught by bavuma i think. timed the pull shot well but straight into his hands, another 40 for compton though.

taylor came and went in one delivery, playing a strange shot to rabada and de kock took the catch on his return to the side. root and stokes rebuilt the innings until root poked at one of morris and was also caught behind for 50.

stokes and bairstow saw england to the end of play, stokes on 70 odd and bairstow on his way to a 50. worth pointing out that the run rate between these two was approaching 9 runs an over at stages as england accelerated instead of settling down. england finishing the day on 317-5.

Well well Ben Stokes - what an innings this has been. I thought yesterday was fantastic but what an acceleration to 200 that has been.

Can't wait until he's had his lunch and he's back out again.

Bairstow is also brilliant but totally eclipsed by this amazing batting display.
