A boy drops an orange, a second boy picks it up. Boy two won't give it bag. Boy one shouts for handers. Boy two gives back orange under duress. Boy one's Big Pals slap boy two round the head for being a thieving wee git. Boy two's pals see this and a riot breaks out.

Thats me paraphrasing a blurb in the John o'groats Courier or similar.

Much better now Trus, cheers.

How 300 folks can suddenly get involved in a mass brawl is incomprehensible to me, evidence of a mob mentality on both sides.
I blame the Gaelic speakers ! Laugh ...
Really, besieging the Police Station because an innocent man from Lewis (and later another one was also detained) had been arrested, totally out of order, old boy !

The second round (so to speak) on the following Saturday (and this after the North Yorkshire military had arrived too) was a nasty business, with the stabbings, good to hear the perpetrators were all eventually arrested.

The town's name, Wick, comes from the old Norse word 'Vik' which meant 'bay'. The Norse pronounced 'Vik' as "Week' (indeed the word 'Viking' or 'vikngr' was pronounced 'weekinger'), which is how the town is still known in Caithness to this day.

The other main settlement in Caithness - Thurso - takes its name from the old Norse term for 'Thor's river' - 'Thor-sa' or 'Theorsa'. Locals still refer to the town as 'Thursa' with a soft 's', never a hard 's' or 'z' sound. Thursa, not Thurzo. Thumb up

There's no escaping the Norse influence in Caithness.

Jan de Groote was a Dutch trader who settled in Caithness back in the fourteenth or fifteenth century. He operated a ferry to Orkney after the Norse gave the islands back to the Scots.

The Caithness dialect word for stomach - 'boug' - strongly resembles the Dutch equivalent - 'boik'. I've often suspected there's a link through old Jan.

Cheers, Trus. The property transfer was in 1468.

Glorious sunshine, light winds, fair temperatures and a favourable forecast, and Academy are pushing their Boardroom Hospitality tickets (£40) on Twatter. . .

Guess this all means that tonight's Scottish Cup Third Round tie is ON!!! Thumb up
