I think the complexion of the school changed when George Mack kicked the bucket and even more so once it became a co-ed comprehensive school. I remember when George died btw. Happened while I was at uni. Griffin took over for a while.

What distinguished alumni from HS: SCO, madsteve & PEI!!!

When I started there it hadn't been a grammar school for about 7 years, although there were still some of the old style grammar school teachers around. Mrs Maguire was a math teacher I had for a couple of years, she had been there years and was a typical grammar school teacher. High Storrs did well in my day academically probably because of the likes of her and some of the older teachers.

There was still two tuck shops when I was there. There were a few decent teachers but the standard started slipping in the years I was there.
The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.

We had a Tuck shop when I was Abbeydale Boys Grammar but can't remember what happened after we went all Comprehensive.

We did have a cool 'coffee bar' in the 6th form though. Supposed to use it as a Study hall to help us transition to Uni but recall we spent most of the time there playing cards.

BTW PEI's book was an excellent read (you should all down load it) and brought back lots of memories of Sheffield as it was when I was growing up in the 60's and early 70's.

I suppose it will be a blast into the days when everything was black and white for me.

When did the world get all its colour BTW?

I only remember Abbeydale Girls' Grammar. My girlfriend went there. She were smashin. Reight good lass. Heart

Thanks for the shout out Washington. I'm not in this to make $$. I've lost thousands literally so far. My original intention was to donate a portion of the proceeds to mental health charities in UK and Canada. But, since I'm on the deficit side, I can't ask them to share in that. What I will be doing though is making a donation to the local psychiatric hospital for a specific need that it has. Thumb up

Also, to point out that since I self published my book, I have to do my own PR, no major publishing company to do it for me. So, if it comes across as "blowing my own trumpet," (I did use to play one though), that's the reason. Whistle

I spent my formative years in Wakefield and went to Queen Elizabeth's Grammar which is now an independent. We had a study centre for the VI form converted from a couple of terrace houses with desks upstairs and a lounge downstairs. We spent a lot of time playing charades. [Image: confused.png]

Perhaps that's why I foooked up at Uni. I was bright enough to get good grades at A level without really having to do any work. A BSc course in Civil Engineering at a top Uni came as a bit of a shock.
