Is Steven Gerrard overrated?

Yes he's been a good player, but come on! Some of the tributes being bandied about today are just silly.
He has to be the most overrated player in the game.

I agree. He's a good player but the tributes are going a bit far. One player does not make a team, Liverpool FC was there before Gerrard and it will be there after he retires.

Don't think Palace had read the script. They were supposed to let him win.

I wouldn't say he was overrated. In recent seasons he's been much diminished as a player, but in his prime he was outstanding. He carried a lot of decidedly average players at Liverpool over the years, scored countless wonder goals, and often dominated the entire flow of matches. It seemed to be his will alone that won Liverpool some memorable matches including the Champions League final victory (although I'd argue it was Didi Hamann whose presence swung it in the second half of that match tactically).

I agree with El Car, in his prime he was as close to world class that we had in this country. His loyalty to Liverpool is admirable but he would have won many more trophies and for sure the Premier League title with one of the truly big teams. Chelsea wanted him a few years ago, he would have won 2 or 3 titles with them.

I don't think you can call him loyal Charles after he handed in several transfer requests. Back in 2005 after he won the Champions League he told the press he wanted to leave Anfield. Real Madrid, Chelsea and an Italian team were after him. If Fergie had tried to buy him for United he would have probably gone.

I've often wondered exactly how it would have worked if Gerrard had moved to Chelsea because they'd have had the same problem there. I suspect it would have ended up the same way: Lampard was a fairly limited player in his range of skills so if both were playing he would have to be in the middle, while Gerrard would be cursed by his relative versatility to sit out wide. I'm sure England even tried to use both in a midfield 3 but that didn't work either.

I thought they were talking about someone else. What about punching people in nightclubs and lobbying for managers to leave Anfield?
