I think some of you older lot are blinkered by these great days in the early 90's. Spoilt by 4/5 good seasons 20 years ago.

Top managers will not come to us. Top players will not come to us. We're not one of the top teams anymore. We aren't even one of the top teams in the championship. We are a mid table side and are currently having our 2nd best season in 15 years.

Who said we are a top side these days??  Yes those of us who lived through the early 90s were definitely spoiled, and rightly or wrongly we will always compare our current team to that one!!  I don't mean this to sound condescending, but until you have lived through something like we did for those few seasons, you cannot imagine how your expectations and standards change, and for certain what you want changes as well.

Wereham said he wanted a great manager, and referred to Big Ron, but I don't think he is expecting that sort of hire now, but there is no reason why we should not be able to get a very good manager with a good track record in the English game.  McClaren managed England but is now at Derby, that is the sort of manager level we should be looking at.  Paul Lambert, Pearson if he gets canned, or any of the other ex-prem managers would probably be interested in the position.  Once thing is for sure, we can and should be doing better than SG going forward.

As regards players, no one is expecting top players to come to us, but we should be expecting better players!!  Look at the players other Championship teams have bought, that is the market we are now in, instead of the free transfer or unproven youngster market as we have seen for the past few years.  We will now have the capability of competing within reason with wages compared to other teams in the championship but players capable of playing in the prem will still go there rather than us, or any championship side for that matter, so they probably will not come as you say.  One thing is for sure, we now represent a much better opportunity that we did three months ago for prospective players, we have ambition and we now have some money behind us to back that ambition up, that will attract a better quality player than we have been used to.

What Thurny is also missing is that most of us on here who lived through the heady days of the early 90's also lived through the worst period in our history, the mid 70's Doh so no, we are not blinkered by the past young man Whistle

Very good point!!  If anyone thinks today is bad, shit it was seriously dire in the mid 70s until Big Jack arrived!!!!

Even in the 70's we were considered one of the big teams and could attract the names because of that.
You're missing my point a bit though. We aren't a big team anymore and some need to realise that we can't just expect people to want to come to us because we want someone better (you mentioned McLaren SCO, he moved to a Derby team who consistently finished in and around the top 6, not bottom half)

SG probably isn't the man to take us up but is part of the process of making us more attractive to the bigger names and has not done a bad job of it so far considering the little amount of backing he has had thus far. Shouting for him to go, calling him names and suggesting ridiculous names to take over is quite disrespectful to him

We are now known to be chasing promotion. We have money to back that & we will be the most eligible club in the Championship for a manager to join. Whereas in the past, we have had to make do, now we can at least get someone a lot better.

I see ST are going up by about 10%, 4 times inflation. Also, there is no comparison of the discount against match day prices so how can anyone make a judgement on the value of the deal being offered.

We could sell 20,000 ST next season after the takeover with ST at an attractive price and a bright manager in charge. A lot of the people who would buy tickets are put off by the dirge that SG keeps churning out.

Our ST prices for next season are just about double the price Derby are charging this season.

ST are going up 9x inflation on the kop (latest CPI was 1.1%, expected to be lower still in March) but football has it's own economy outside of the real world

I don't think anyone is being particularly disrespectful towards SG. I think most fans still like him, unlike when DJ came to the end of his reign, but I think most fans also agree that he is not the guy to take up to the next level and at some point will have his role changed or be removed completely!! I happen to thing that when MM appointed him but gave him the Head Coach title rather than the manager one it was nothing to do with appointing a Director of Football, it was so he could bring in a manager if he thought it was needed at some point. But thats just my opinion.

The run in this season is still important though, for as you say the higher we finish the more people will sit up and take notice and we will begin to be compared to Blackburn, Forest, Derby, and Watford instead of Millwall, Hudds, Rotherham and Blackpool. I would also expect that we will have much shorter odds to win the division, gain promotion or get in the playoffs than what we started with this season, again that raises the profile for players and managers alike.

Everyone likes SG. I think the majority still want him to continue if you read other forums.

The trouble is that we are now attractive & can get a better manager.
