Notts County have signed Bradford City defender Matty Platt on a two-year contract - the League Two club's first summer signing.

Platt, 26, moves to Meadow Lane on a free transfer following two years with the Bantams.

He moved to Valley Parade after three years at Barrow, who he helped win promotion back to the Football League Two in 2020.

“Having played in the middle of a back three under Ian Evatt at Barrow, we have every confidence in Matty’s ability to embrace our style of play," said Richard Montague, who sits on the Notts board and is in charge of their recruitment.

"We know that was a huge influence in him choosing us over many other clubs this summer. While he is more than capable of being a top performer for us next season, at 26, and with a fantastic attitude and clear desire to improve, we feel he is someone who can progress through the leagues with us.

"Matty’s arrival is the perfect start to our summer transfer business and is a reflection of the quality we’re looking to bring to the club."

Notts, promoted back to the Football League with Wrexham in 2023, finished 14th in League Two this season, falling out of contention with a run of just two wins in 15 games after boss Luke Williams left for Swansea City.

Notts County have signed goalkeeper Alex Bass from Sunderland on a three-year deal for an undisclosed fee.

The 26-year-old made only two cup appearances for the Black Cats after joining them from Portsmouth in the summer of 2022.

"He’s a commanding presence who we feel will give us a huge advantage in dealing with the threats we struggled against in 2023-24," said Richard Montague, who is Notts' board lead on recruitment.

The Magpies had the worst defensive record in League Two last season, conceding 86 goals, but as one of the division's most prolific teams they finished 14th in the table.

Notts County have signed free-agent defender Robbie Cundy on a one-year deal.

The 27-year-old was released by Barnsley after not making a single appearance for the League One club last season because of injury problems.

He is Notts' eighth signing of the summer following Matty Platt, Jacob Bedeau, Alex Bass, Nick Tsaroulla, Rod McDonald, Curtis Edwards and Kellan Gordon.

"Robbie’s known as a big, aggressive centre-half – but if you look at his game, he’s technically very good and someone who nearly always picks the right pass," said, external head coach Stuart Maynard.

"He’s been very unfortunate with injury, which has held him back and is probably the only reason we’re able to sign him at this level.

“But he’s in very good condition and, after really impressing us in the games against Wycombe and Wealdstone, as well as on camp in the Netherlands, we’re looking forward to seeing him continue to build his minutes in pre-season."

Notts start the new League Two season with a trip to Tranmere Rovers on 10 August.

Notts County have signed Lucas Ness from League One side Charlton Athletic for an undisclosed fee.

The 22-year-old defender has signed a three-year deal - with an option to the club to extend for a further year.

“Lucas is an outstanding young defender, who has already proven himself highly capable at League One level." said Notts director Richard Montague.

“He’s fantastic in the air, comfortable on the ball and, while perfectly suited to the right centre back role, is capable of playing anywhere across the back three."

Montague added: “He is coming to the end of a successful rehabilitation from an injury last season. This is very much a signing made with the long-term in mind. It doesn’t affect our plans to strengthen other areas before the transfer window closes.

"Sometimes, in the transfer market, an opportunity presents itself which is too good to pass up – and the board are in agreement that this is one of those instances.”

Notts have now made 11 signings in this summer window - having also brought in defenders Matty Platt, Jacob Bedeau, Rod McDonald, Robbie Cundy, midfielders Jack Hinchy, Conor Grant, Curtis Edwards, goalkeeper Alex Bass, and wing-backs Nick Tsaroulla and Kellan Gordon.

Notts have started the new League Two season with successive draws at home to Fleetwood Town and at Tranmere Rovers, either side of drawing 3-3 in the League Cup at Shrewsbury Town, only to exit on penalties.

Their next game is at home to Grimsby on Thursday before a trip to Swindon Town on Saturday, 31 August.
