League One Charlton Athletic have signed former MK Dons defender Tennai Watson on a two-year-deal.

The 26-year-old made 30 appearances for the Dons in the third tier last season before opting to leave the club following their relegation.

"Charlton are a big club with an ambition that aligns with mine," Watson told the club website.

"The main thing is to get playing, try and impact the team in a positive way and achieve something this season."

Watson, who came through Reading academy and has had loan spells with AFC Wimbledon and Coventry City, becomes the Addicks eighth summer signing.

The club say his versatility as a defender brings strength to their squad.

"Tennai is a young defender with all the attributes we are looking for in a full-back," technical director Andy Scott added.

"He is athletic, technically sound, defends well and enjoys getting into forward areas."

Charlton have signed defender Tennai Watson and brought in Udinese defender James Abankwah and Luton midfielder Louie Watson on season-long loan deals.

Full-back Watson, 26, has signed a two-year contract with the League One club following his departure from MK Dons earlier this summer.

Hatters man Watson, 22, featured nine times in all competitions last season.

Fellow Republic of Ireland Under-21 international Abankwah, 19, has played twice in Italy's Serie A for Udinese.

The centre-back, who can also operate at right-back, signed for the Italian club from St Patrick's Athletic in January 2022 but spent the final few months of the 2021-22 campaign back on loan with the League of Ireland Premier Division side.

Charlton have signed 10 players during the summer transfer window.

"Tennai is a young defender with all the attributes we are looking for in a full-back," Addicks technical director Andy Scott told the club website.

"We have had a number of injuries in our midfield area and so the acquisition of Louie will complement the group well and give us more strength in depth.

"James is a player that I watched a number of years ago in Ireland and I have followed his career ever since."

Charlton Athletic have signed former Kilmarnock and Colchester United goalkeeper Sam Walker.

The 32-year-old was a free agent after leaving the Scottish top-flight side in the summer.

He made 28 appearances for Kilmarnock last season and spent the bulk of his career at Colchester, playing 213 times in a five-and-a-half year spell both on loan from Chelsea and permanently.

Walker has agreed a deal until early January with League One Charlton.

Walker, who will provide cover while Harry Isted recovers from a knee injury, has also had spells at clubs including Reading, Bristol Rovers and Northampton Town.

"Sam is a very experienced goalkeeper who will push Ash for the first team shirt while Harry is recovering from his injury and then compete with them both," Charlton technical director Andy Scott told the club website.

"He has played a lot of first team football at all levels and has demonstrated maturity and quality in the time he has spent with us and gives us excellent cover in the goalkeeping department."

Charlton Athletic winger Charlie Kirk has left the club by mutual consent.

The 25-year-old came through the ranks at Crewe, making 206 appearances before moving to The Valley in 2021.

Kirk made 48 Addicks appearances, with four goals, but was loaned to Blackpool and Burton and has only played 20 minutes in League One this season.

Technical director Andy Scott said: "Unfortunately it hasn't worked out during his time here and he's not been playing regular first-team football."

He added: "We've come to an amicable agreement that frees up a bit of space ahead of the January window and allows Charlie to go and find a suitable opportunity to get back to enjoying playing regular football again."

Charlton Athletic have signed Huddersfield Town defender Rarmani Edmonds-Green for an undisclosed fee.

The 25-year-old has agreed a two-and-a-half-year deal with Charlton having the option to extend it by a further year.

He is the fifth new player to move to the League One side this month, after Tyreeq Bakinson, Lewis Fiorini, Conor Coventry and Macaulay Gillesphey.

"I'm obviously a south London boy, so I'm buzzing to be here and be back home," Edmonds-Green the club website.

"As soon as I heard about the interest, I just wanted to get down here and get going. I spoke to Michael Appleton and I like his ideas and his style of play."

He helped Rotherham win promotion to the Championship in 2022 and has played 116 times across all three tiers of the English Football League and the National League.

"He's got lots of quality on the ball, he's very athletic and he's quick," Charlton head coach Appleton said.

Charlton have signed Ipswich striker Freddie Ladapo on loan until the end of the season.

The 30-year-old has won promotion from League One in both of the past two seasons, first with Rotherham and then with Ipswich.

He has made 22 appearances this season, the vast majority from the substitutes' bench, scoring four goals.

Ladapo said: "I'm so excited to be here and I'm looking forward to seeing what we can achieve this season."

Addicks boss Michael Appleton told the club website: "Freddie's a massive goal threat who brings lots of quality.

"He's very quick, he's athletic, he's got a very good record at this level and he's a really exciting signing. I think everyone is going to look forward to having him on board."

Ladapo began his professional career at Colchester and after a nine-club stay in non-league he was snapped up by Crystal Palace after a trial, making his Eagles debut in a Premier League match at Manchester United in 2017.

He moved to Southend, before scoring 19 goals for Plymouth in 2018/19, earning a club-record move to Rotherham where he scored 41 goals in three seasons, securing automatic promotion to the Championship twice and also lifting the EFL Trophy.

He joined Ipswich ahead of the 2022/23 campaign and scored 17 league goals as the Tractor Boys secured a return to the Championship.

Charlton Athletic have signed former Swindon Town goalkeeper Lewis Ward on a deal until the end of the season.

The 26-year-old made eight appearances for the Robins earlier this season but left the County Ground last week.

He will strengthen the goalkeeping ranks for the rest of this season with a club option of an additional year.

Ward told the club website: "I'm really excited. They want me to come in, compete and drive the goalkeeping department on."

Addicks head coach Michael Appleton said: "We've needed a third goalkeeper since Sam Walker left the club and Lewis will bring a lot of experience. It's an opportunity for Ash [Maynard-Brewer] and Harry [Isted] to be pushed further and the competition for places will rise."

Ward began his career at Reading and has also played for Exeter City and Sutton United, with two spells at Swindon, most recently in a player-youth coach capacity.
