Declared 393-8 if Aussies bat for more than 2 days we won't win this game

Just when Root is motoring along and we're set for 400+, Stokes declares on 393-8. Curiouser and curiouser.

Very strange decision.

Well, I suppose that tsunami of late Australian wickets fully justified us giving up the momentum and God knows how many runs Rolleyes

Looking even more like a daft decision to declare now. But.....

They know what they're doing.

First half of today we did alright, but we started getting the basics wrong this afternoon and it just snowballed. Missed stumping, missed catches, poor bowling at times, and you could visibly see the psychological slump after the Broad no-ball; a real turning point. Need a strong start again in the morning.

Moeen off injured sore finger, no surprise bowling four overs every couple of days is no practice for a five day test, Robinson off the field at times yesterday, Anderson and Broad not exactly in the first flush of youth, still think he declared too early

Got the job done with the ball this morning, but lost both openers to the afternoon conditions. Rain did us a favour eventually, forecast's good for tomorrow, anything close to 300 will be a good lead.

Leaving the 2005 parallels aside, 281 strikes me as a par target rather than a good one, and though I think our missed chances have been the real bane of this match, if we don't pull it off tomorrow then everyone will naturally zero on in the declaration and the extra 20-30 we could have had. Conditions should be in our favour, but Khawaja will try to anchor the innings, and I expect Head and Carey (when they get in) will put the pedal down.

Whatever happens, it's been the best Ashes Test in donkey's years; superior even to Headingley 2019 in all aspects so far except the finale. Here's hoping we get a fitting one.
