Exeter City midfielder Jack Sparkes has confirmed that he is leaving the League One club at the end of the season.

The 22-year-old joined the Grecians academy aged eight and will make his farewell against Morecambe on Sunday.

It will be Sparkes' 150th appearance for City, adding to three games he made for Torquay during a brief loan spell.

"It is an emotional time for me, but speaking to the manager, it is time for a new opportunity for me somewhere else which I'm looking forward to," he said.

"I am immensely proud of where I have come from and what I have done for the club."

Sparkes has five assists this season, and has scored nine goals in his Exeter career, including three last season to help the club win promotion to League One.

"Since January, his game time has been limited due to competition in his position," said manager Gary Caldwell.

"But he has been a brilliant servant for the club who has contributed a lot this season and last season in the promotion campaign, which I know will always be special to him."

Exeter City forward Jevani Brown is one of three first-team players being released by the League One club.

Brown, 28, scored 14 goals and had nine assists before being suspended in early February after being charged with assault and has not played since.

Also leaving the club are goalkeeper Jamal Blackman and homegrown left-back Jack Sparkes - whose departure was announced last week.

The club are in talks with four more out-of-contract players.

Academy graduates Josh Key and Archie Collins are yet to agree new deals, while talks are ongoing with former Scotland midfielder Kevin McDonald.

The club are also talking to veteran defender Jonathan Grounds over a player-coach role.

The rest of Exeter's squad remain under contract, while seven academy players have been offered professional terms.

"Josh and Archie are two academy graduates and fantastic players that have given so much to the football club over a number of years," manager Gary Caldwell told the club website.

"The offers that have been made to them are in hope they will stay as they will have offers from our league and leagues above, and if they do go we wish them well for the rest of their careers."

Caldwell says the club does not have to sell any players but would listen to bids if they made financial sense.

He says his priority is strengthening Exeter's squad, especially in attacking areas, after ending their first season back in the third tier for a decade in 14th place.

"We are going to be looking to bring in between eight and 11 players, so we are clear on what positions we need," he said.

"I think defensively we look pretty strong, but from midfield to forwards we need competition for places to fill key positions that players are leaving.

"It's going to be a long window in terms of numbers we are going to bring in, and we need to go right to the very end of the window to get the quality we want.

"Hopefully, like in January, we can come out of it better as a squad."

Kevin McDonald is set to leave Exeter City after turning down a new contract.

The former Scotland international joined the club in January on a short-term contract and played 11 games for the League One side last season.

The 35-year-old's short stay at St James Park saw him score three times, including his first goal since a kidney transplant in 2021.

Manager Gary Caldwell had expressed his hope that McDonald would stay with the Grecians.

He said McDonald had made "a big impact" after signing a short-term deal in the mid-season transfer window.

The former Fulham and Wolves player, who won five caps for his country, had contemplated a move into coaching as he recovered from life-saving surgery - after being diagnosed with IgA nephropathy just over two years ago.

"All at Exeter City wish Kev the best with his next move," the club said.

Exeter City have signed left-sided defender Vincent Harper from National League side Eastleigh for an undisclosed fee.

The 22-year-old, who can play at left-back or wing-back, has agreed a two-year deal at St James Park with the option of a further year.

The former Bristol City youngster scored five goals in 71 games during an 18-month spell at the Spitfires.

He is the first new signing Exeter have made this season.

"He is coming here with a skillset and the tools to compete to get into our first team right now, but he is also nowhere near his ceiling," Exeter City assistant manager Kevin Nicholson told the club website.

"He has a huge amounts of potential, and hopefully we can do what we do here at Exeter City and tap in to that to help him achieve what he wants to achieve.

"He is very direct and very similar to Demetri Mitchell, and it will be hugely beneficial to him to have someone like Demetri around because he will pick up a lot working with a player like that."

Exeter City have signed former Motherwell striker Jack Aitchison.

The 23-year-old has agreed a two-year deal at the League One club having spent the second half of last season at the Scottish top-flight side.

Before that the former Celtic academy graduate spent more than two years at Barnsley and also had loans at Stevenage and Forest Green Rovers.

He is the youngest ever player to play for Celtic after making his debut aged 16 years and 71 days in May 2016.

He also scored in that fixture - a 7-0 win over Motherwell - to also hold the record as the Bhoys' youngest ever goalscorer.

"Jack is a player I've known for some time," said Exeter boss Gary Caldwell.

"He fits the profile of what we want at the football club - he's hungry to develop - and he brings a lot of quality in a position we need competition in, given who has left.

"He'll bring goals as well. We worked hard to get him as he was wanted by a number of clubs, so we're delighted to bring him in."

Exeter City have signed former Dunfermline Athletic and Brentford midfielder Reece Cole.

The 25-year-old has agreed a one-year deal after impressing since joining on trial this summer.

He made one league appearance for Brentford having come up through the club's academy and also spent time on loan at Yeovil and Macclesfield Town.

"Reece is someone I've known for a long time and I'm sure he's spoken that his career hasn't gone the way in which he wanted it to," said Exeter manager Gary Caldwell.

"We have brought him in to train with us and all of us have been impressed with both on and off the pitch.

"He's someone who has had tough times and fell out of love with the game, but he's come here hungry and fit and he thoroughly deserves the contract.

"Reece is a set-piece expert and he has all-round quality to help this team and effect the league."

Exeter City have signed Chelsea winger Dion Rankine on a season-long loan.

The 20-year-old, who moved to Stamford Bridge in 2014 from Cambridge United, has yet to make a senior appearance.

He has played eight times for Chelsea's academy in the EFL Trophy, including facing Exeter in August 2021 and is City's fourth new signing this summer.

"Dion is someone we were interested in for his speed and his ability in one v one situations," Exeter manager Gary Caldwell told the club website.

"I think he will bring competition to that right hand side. It's always pretty difficult to get someone on loan from Chelsea so we're delighted we've been able to do that.

"He's a very similar profile to Josh Key and he provides a real attacking threat."
