New Crewe Alexandra boss Alex Morris has made his first signing by bringing in midfielder Conor Thomas from League One side Cheltenham Town.

The 28-year-old ex-Coventry City player has signed a two-year deal at Mornflake Stadium.

Thomas, capped by England at under-17 and under-18 level, looked destined for the top when Liverpool signed him on loan in 2011.

But injury halted a proposed switch to Anfield on a more permanent basis.

After more than 100 appearances for Coventry, he left for Swindon Town in 2016 before moving on again to Indian Super League club ATK a year later.

He returned to English football in 2018 to sign for Cheltenham, where he has scored 20 goals in 146 appearances and was part of their League Two play-off side in 2019-20 and their promotion-winning team in 2020-21.

Crewe start next season back in League Two following relegation after four years in League One under David Artell, who was sacked in April and replaced by Morris.

Defender Kelvin Mellor has returned for a second spell at Crewe Alexandra.

The Crewe-born 31-year-old first joined the club from non-league Nantwich Town aged 17 in 2008 and went onto make 92 appearances before leaving in 2014 to join Plymouth.

He has been given a one-year deal after being released by Carlisle, who signed him last summer.

Mellor's career has also included spells with Bradford City, Morecambe and Blackpool.

His arrival is the second signing made by new Crewe boss Alex Morris following midfielder Conor Thomas, who joined from Cheltenham Town on Thursday.

Crewe were relegated back to League Two this season after finishing bottom of the League One table with only seven wins.

Crewe Alexandra defender Zac Williams has signed a new undisclosed-length contract with the relegated League One club.

The 18-year-old made his Football League debut at Bolton in November.

Williams, a Wales Under-19 international, played 20 times in 2021-22 but his season was ended by injury in a draw with Ipswich on 23 April.

"He's tall and lean and has good physical attributes," assistant manager Lee Bell told the club website.

"He trains hard - it's refreshing to see a young lad with so much determination to do what he's here to do - become a footballer.

"I'm not saying other people don't have determination, they show it in different ways, but he is a real leader."

Crewe have signed Courtney Baker-Richardson after the striker turned down a new contract at Newport.

Baker-Richardson, who scored eight goals in 32 games for County this season, has agreed a two-year deal with the relegated Alex.

The 26-year-old began his career at Coventry before playing in non-league with Nuneaton, Redditch and Leamington.

His scoring exploits earned him a move to Swansea, where he netted three times in 17 Championship games.

Baker-Richardson is Crewe's third signing this summer, following midfielder Conor Thomas and defender Kelvin Mellor.

He then signed for for Ostersunds in Sweden before joining Cheltenham in January, making nine appearances.

Crewe Alexandra have signed Arsenal goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo on a season-long loan deal.

The 20-year-old is yet to make his competitive debut for the Gunners but has featured for them in pre-season and signed a long-term contract at the Emirates Stadium last summer.

"We are delighted. Arsenal have been exceptional in facilitating the deal," Crewe boss Alex Morris said.

Okonkwo will provide competition for Dave Richards at the Mornflake Stadium.

EFL season preview: How will your team fare?

"He was our number one target right from the start of the summer," Morris added.

"He has great stature, he's a good shot-stopper and has a good record of saving penalties. I believe Arsenal have aspirations of him playing in their first team in the future but for now he is here to help us."

Okonkwo has been signed in time to be eligible for Crewe's opening game of the new season at Rochdale on Saturday as they begin life back in League Two following relegation last term.
