Veteran midfielder Wes Hoolahan has been released by Cambridge United.

The 39-year-old played 66 games and scored eight goals in his two years at the club, and helped the U's to promotion to League One last season.

Hoolahan won 43 caps for the Republic of Ireland and played at Euro 2016, and also twice won promotion to the Premier League in a 10-year stint at Norwich.

Goalkeeper Kai-McKenzie Lyle and defender Tom Dickens have also been released by Cambridge.

"To play as much as I did and for us to have achieved what I did, it has been a really special part of my life and career," Hoolahan told the club's website.

"The day we won promotion is the day that will live with me the longest.

"Nobody gave us a chance that season and for us to finally get over the line - after a bit of a wobble - and then to celebrate with the fans on the roof was definitely my biggest highlight. Just an unbelievable day, season and moment for the club."

Hoolahan began his career at Shelbourne, in Ireland, before moving to Livingston in 2005.

He joined Blackpool after a successful loan before moving to the Canaries in 2008, where he played four seasons in the Premier League.

The attacking midfielder was named in the League Two team of the season for his role in Cambridge's promotion last season.

The club has also offered new contracts to Greg Taylor, Jack Iredale, Liam O'Neil, Harrison Dunk, Adam May and Will Mannion.

Cambridge United captain Greg Taylor has signed a new one-year deal.

It means the 32-year-old defender, whose contract was due to expire this summer, will stay for a 10th season at the Abbey Stadium.

The League One club have confirmed that plans are being made for a testimonial match for Taylor, who joined them from Luton in 2013.

He has been out of action since suffering a fractured ankle against Plymouth last August.

"I am really happy to be here for next year," Taylor told the club website.

"I am ready to put last season behind me and come in ready for next season and give it a really good go.

"I am feeling good. I will be working all the way through the summer to make sure that I am ready to roll first day of pre-season and come back in good shape. I can't wait."

Cambridge United full-back Harrison Dunk has followed the lead of captain Greg Taylor by agreeing a new one-year contract with the League One club.

The 31-year-old has made more than 400 appearances for the U's since joining them from non-league Bromley in 2011.

He played 45 games in the 2021-22 season, scoring once.

"He has had a strong season on the pitch and is a reliable and consistent player that we need in the squad," said Cambridge boss Mark Bonner.

Taylor, 32, signed his new deal on Thursday.

The U's finished 14th in the table this season and knocked Premier League club Newcastle United out of the FA Cup before losing to Luton in the fourth round.

"Obviously the club is going in the right direction and has been for the past few years. It is amazing to be a part of it," Dunk told the Cambridge website.

"We have got a really good squad and hopefully we can build on that next year."
