The happy campers in the picture from Blackburn

The Irish international forward, who initially joined on loan from Aston Villa before completing a permanent transfer in July 2016, made almost 150 appearances in his spells at Deepdale, scoring 35 goals in the process.

He was also awarded his first international recognition last season, being selected for Ireland, as well as finishing the 2018/19 season as top goalscorer, with 13 goals, despite having missed a large chunk of the season with a serious hamstring injury.

Speaking about the transfer, manager Alex Neil felt it was a good move for all parties, he said: “We are in a situation where we have been given a good offer, Callum has seen his future in the Premier League if that opportunity came along, which it did, and we had to try and maximise the cash intake for us, so we can try and strengthen the squad and strengthen the club.

“I am gutted Callum has left. He was a great lad about the place, but he has deserved his chance and he has worked very hard for a couple of seasons. He has improved no end; he has been a double figure goalscorer for us for the last few seasons and we should remember him fondly and wish him all the best.

“It was a nice send off for him. I let the lads know he was going to be moving on to pastures new and everybody appreciated what he did while he was here.

“I had a chat with him and he was very thankful for the help he has had since we have been here. He has deserved it – he scored 13 goals last season, having missed four months of the season – so I am very hopeful he will go on and do well at his new club and what it does is allow us to go and strengthen the club even more.

“If he had walked away for nothing at the end of the season, that wouldn’t have been good business sense for the club going forward.”

OLD FART RETURNS

Preston North End have agreed a deal to re-sign striker David Nugent, who has put pen to paper on a deal from 1st August.

The Liverpool-born forward, who originally arrived at Deepdale from Bury in January 2005, has gone on to have a stellar career in the Premier League and Championship, scoring over 160 goals.

His first spell saw him score 37 goals in 95 starts leading to a move to then Premier League Portsmouth for what was then a club record fee.

He had a four-year spell with Leicester City that saw him score a goal every three games in 180 appearances and most recently was part of the Derby County squad under Frank Lampard that reached the Play-Off Final in May.

Nuge, who will take the No.35 shirt he first wore when he initially joined the Lilywhites from the Shakers, has been undergoing rehabilitation for an injury he picked up in the first leg of the Play-Offs, but will work with the North End physios ready for a return to action in the coming weeks and will complete his deal in time for the new season.

Speaking about his return, the 34-year-old said: “I’m delighted to be back. It’s been a long time since I left the club, we came so close to getting promoted twice and hopefully I can come back and it can be third time lucky and try and get this club to the Premier League.

“I might be 34, but I still have plenty of running in my legs. I might have to prove that on the pitch if selected by the manager. I have not just come here to take anyone’s place in the team, I have come to be part of a team and help the lads achieve what they want to achieve.

“It’s a young bunch who are hungry to get to the Premier League. Hopefully the likes of Gally [Paul Gallagher], myself and some of the older pros, can help the young lads through it.”

Andre Green Signs For Preston North End
Preston North End have completed the signing of Andre Green on a year’s long loan from Aston Villa.

The 21-year-old winger, who has played for England from U16 to U20 levels, made 22 appearances for the Villans last season, involved in both the Play-Off semi-finals and the Final victory over Derby County at Wembley.

He will take the No.19 shirt at Deepdale, the same number as his shirt for his parent club and will be available for manager Alex Neil to go straight into the squad for the weekend’s Championship opener at Millwall, if selected.

Speaking after completing the paperwork on the deal he said: “I am happy I am here. I just spoke to the gaffer; everything is exciting and I can’t wait to get started and meet the lads.

“I had a good season in the Championship last year and I am excited to be here to bring that experience I have had into this team. The lads dealt with it really well last year and hopefully I can bring some extra power to the attack of the team and we can go somewhere this season.

“The gaffer has said he wants to improve me as a player. As a winger you can see what happened to Callum [Robinson] and how much he improved over the course of last season. He wants me to come away from this season as a better player than when I have arrived and more goals is what I need to add to my game and he is confident I can do that.”

Manager Alex Neil added: "Andre played the second half of season at Aston Villa in a team that was promoted. We are very hopeful that his directness, his pace and his creativity will add to our front line and that he will score and supply goals.

"The experience of being involved in an event the magnitude of the Play-Offs and the Final, in particular, will help to him spur him on to have more success and hopefully that will be with Preston North End."

Preston North End have completed the signing of midfielder Tom Bayliss from Coventry City on a four-year deal for an undisclosed fee.

The 20-year-old has put pen to paper on a deal at Deepdale which runs until at least the summer of 2023.

Bayliss, who has come through the Academy at Coventry, is a highly-rated midfielder and North End have fought off competition from a number of clubs for his signature.

In his first season as professional with the Sky Blues, Bayliss made 30 starts and he helped Coventry win promotion to League One. He then went on to make 41 appearances the following year during the 2018/19 League One campaign.

Speaking after completing the deal, Tom said: "As soon as I heard about the interest I couldn't wait to get here and get the deal done and meet the gaffer and I can't wait to get started now.

"The sheer size of the stadium as we pulled on to the car park, it's massive. It's a massive club and I just can't wait to show what I can do now.

"The gaffer knows what qualities I've got and he thinks he can home in on those skills and make me a better player and be able to play week in, week out at this level.”

On his fourth signing of the summer, manager Alex Neil added: “He is a young lad who has got huge talent. In League Two he got promoted and in League One he had a very good season and we are hoping to continue his development.

"He is one of those lads that can play in a variety of different positions in the middle. He's got good legs, good use of the ball and we think he is going to be a real prospect for the future.

"As long as we provide enough experience for the lads throughout the spine of the team, I think our main objective will also be to get younger players, develop them and bring the best out of them. That has been a successful model for the club and that is something we will co
