Both Root and Buttler getting themselves out right after their century was the one-two that killed England. Not much else between the two sides, both shelled some simple catches and were guilty of iffy fielding at times.

It's a match we'd have banked on winning, all the same, and with India, Australia and New Zealand all still to come, can't afford too many slip-ups. Typical England to whitewash a side and then blow it when it counts; typical Pakistan to show up out of nowhere on the day!

Week One Roundup

Seven days in, it's delight for New Zealand as the only team so far to win two from two, and despair for South Africa having lost all of their three, and effectively eliminated themselves within a week. Pakistan were humiliated by the short-pitched fast bowling of a resurgent West Indies, only to do some resurging of their own days later as they brought England crashing back down to earth. Little in the way of alarm for Australia or India in their opening game; Bangladesh provided one upset and came close to another, only to let themselves down with some fine-margin errors. Elsewhere, Sri Lanka have proved as troubled as expected, but managed to just about see off Afghanistan who may well have a long hard run ahead.

Australia just about scrape home after some very iffy umpiring on Chris Gayle. Given out caught behind, overturned on review as he never touched it. Given out LBW four balls later, overturned on review as it was outside the line *and* missing the stumps. Given out LBW again, review shows umpire's call by a hair's breadth so he has to walk, and then later it turns out that the delivery before was a blatant no-ball missed by the ump, so it should have been a free hit all along.

Good, sound performance from England to bounce back from Monday's defeat and see off a potential banana skin in Bangladesh. New highest World Cup innings of 386, and only 22 runs off breaking the all-time biggest match aggregate. Roy flattening the umpire after his century was one of the funniest things I've seen in a while!

South Africa as good as homeward bound now, with no result against the Windies and 11 points the maximum they can get. Looks like the weather's going to wipe out most of this week's fixtures, though current forecast suggests England may be fine on Friday.

Week Two Roundup

A fortnight gone, and aren't we having a lovely old summer? We've now doubled the previous record of abandoned games at a tournament, and there's still a month to go. Nevertheless, as one of the two teams still unbeaten, New Zealand lead the way and look a safe bet for the semis, with Australia, India and England also well-placed at present. South Africa are dead and buried without a win; Pakistan and West Indies remain in contention, as do Bangladesh, while Sri Lanka have benefited from abandonments to rise to the giddy heights of 5th, and Afghanistan are just looking for that elusive scalp to make the trip worthwhile.
