Sunderland midfielder Jack Rodwell is on trial at Dutch side Vitesse Arnhem, according to Sky sources.

The 26-year-old has not featured for the Sky Bet Championship club since Chris Coleman took charge in November, with his last first-team appearance coming in September.

Sky Sports News understands Sunderland have offered to rip up Rodwell's £70,000-a-week contract and allow him to leave the club on a free.

But Rodwell, who has 18 months left on his current deal, indicated last week that he had no intention of ripping up his contract and would only leave the club if a transfer can be arranged.

Rodwell started his career at Everton and made 109 appearances for the club before moving to then Premier League champions Manchester City in August 2012 for an initial £12m.

Jack Rodwell was due to start his trial with Vitesse Arnhem on Thursday but that has now been cancelled.

On Wednesday, Vitesse announced that the Sunderland midfielder would spend time in Arnhem ahead of a possible transfer.

However, Vitesse have now announced that it will not happen for “Organisational reasons”. Just why the English international won’t join up with Henk Fraser’s side is not known at this time.

The former Everton and Manchester City star has no future with Sunderland and was expected to join Vitesse on loan until the end of the season.

Jack Rodwell’s disastrous Sunderland spell is finally over after four terrible years with the news that the club and player had come to terms over releasing the 27-year-old from his contract.

With Sunderland being relegated to League One, his wage was always going to be unsustainable despite him taking a wage cut of 40% - a move which had been put off by a year due to a clause in his contract after our relegation from the Premier League. That 40% decrease in wage from his original wage of £70,000 per week would still see the midfielder earn over £40,000 each week, far in excess of the average wage in League One of around £2,000 per week.

Signed for a fee of £10m by Gus Poyet back in 2014, Rodwell played 76 games in all competitions over his four year career at the Stadium of Light. A paltry total considering the vast sums the club invested in his services and due to how often he was either a substitute or failed to finish a game he only played 4,875 minutes for the club, which works out at 54 full games over four seasons.

Rodwell has been linked with a move to Aris Thessaloniki and a move to Major League Soccer and as no club were ever going to offer the club a transfer fee for his services, we may now see the player make a move which will see him get playing time but his Sunderland spell will go down as one of the worst transfers in the club’s history.

Does this move signal that common sense is finally coming back to the Stadium of Light?? Ridiculous contract even when they bought him, he was never that good and while no one could have forseen the injury problems he had, this contract has been a millstone around the neck of the club for 4 years!!
