2016/17 (Jan 30 Update) WBA January Transfer Window
I rated Cleverley a year or 2 ago, but he seems to have gone downhill since. He would obviously replace Fletcher (whose form has dropped the last couple of months) in the starting line-up.

Looks like we're at the back of the queue come 31st January signings. Some used to say this was because of TightWad Peace (as they called him).

I agree with the guys who are questioning our interest in Cleverley. He was "the next best thing" not long ago at United but has gone awol since then. If we believe that we need a more dynamic, forward driving midfielder to replace Fletcher, surely we can do better than Cleverley.

Agree we should look to replace Fletcher in midfield but I do wonder if the fact he's captain means he'll stay in the team.

£30m Euros rejected !!!!

30 million pounds in euros??
Things are really hotting up now, eh? How many new players "in " is that now?  Whistle

GONE TO CHINA - SO ANOTHER ONE NOT GOT. Can't wait to the end and see what left-overs we have to bid for. Still in bad mood after Derby defeat especially if they get a good draw and 6 premiership teams now out of it.

It is going to be interesting and a good indication of how the club is going to progress under the new owners. The optimist in me would like to see a Carvalho/Schneiderlin type of signing. The negative side of me, after supporting for >50 years says it will be more like Cleverley/McCarthy.

I think Cleverley would be an upgrade on Gardner, who is looking more and more like he'll be leaving on a loan to permanent type deal. Covers numerous positions across midfield and is still prominent at Everton despite being labelled a cast off. In the starting 11 or on the bench for all but 2 of their games this season.

Everton will be spending silly money over the next few windows and Cleverley has to move on to free up space on their wage bill, simple as that.

Somerset Baggie is the most realistic despite saying it was a negative side - it will be players in January similar to Cleverley that we'll sign.

If anyone thinks all of a sudden under the new owners we're going to be signing players like Carvalho you may need to pinch yourself as you're dreaming.

We may as well get bids in for Modric, Bale, Iniesta and Alli while we're at it. Got just as much chance at signing those!

Good post HRK, and IMO pretty much spot on - I think we need to be realistic in terms of the players that we could attract and sign.
Hearing TP say that he wants to bring in players to go straight into the TEAM, not just squad players, does indicate that we'll be after players that are proven in a top league - this (to me) is quite a statement and indicates that we'll get better quality coming in.
Who knows who though? !

I wouldn't mind McCarthy and think he'd be a natural successor to Fletcher.

Mobile, covers a lot of ground, tackles and can pass the ball. At 26, is the right sort of age with plenty of Premier League experience. Let's not forget he's been a regular for a pretty decent Everton team for the last few years.

I remember watching him years ago for Wigan against us and some of the ground he covered that day was ridiculously. I remember Jerome Thomas had their full back and toast but McCarthy was there on the cover every time...

Fletcher is coming to the end and is pretty poor on the ball but still covers the ground and does a good job at defending, McCarthy could come into this position and do a similar job, but better.

Wouldn't fancy Cleverly though...
