It's bad enough that it happened. What compounds it all are the large numbers of people who think it'll be Ok and we need to give him a chance. Even Pence is a better option here, the zealot that believes in conversion therapy. That's how severe this situation is.

Trump is the man whom openly said he wants to de-regulate everything. loosen the liable laws for frivolous lawsuits. Repeal Obama care. Water board people for shits and giggles. Remove the supreme court justices and replace them with extreme right wingers.. This list goes on and on.

He can appoint vile people such as Rudy Guiliani & Newt Gingrich to positions of power and influence, the extremist Christians just gained a lot of ground in their crusade to take us all backwards, and live by THEIR faith based system. Peoples basic rights are about to be stripped down more than they previous were, if you could even imagine that??

I'm heartbroken by how dense the masses are, not just in America but globally. This is xxxx serious...

Stateside you are echoing my very thoughts. It's reassuring to see that someone on here other than me sees the real gravity of the situation. It should not be downplayed, minimized, set within a suite of euphemisms. You're bang on. This is ******* serious.

Why should a Canadian, ex Brit like me be upset? Because whenever I see tyranny take over and basic human rights usurped, it bothers me. Especially when it's happening in a country so geographically close to me and one which Canada has always regarded as a true friend.

It's sad but there is absolutely nothing that the likes of us can do to change it. I suggest you carry on as normal because even if he presses the big red button there's still nothing you and I can do. Like I alluded to in an earlier post, just get on with enjoying your own life. Yes it's shit what may/will happen but don't spend too much time worrying about it.

Look at Brexit. 20 odd million people said they wanted out but the elite have now moved the goalposts and 3 people have said that 635 people have to decide if we can leave Doh

You're right Maddix. Eventually I'll get over it. Just finding it difficult to process right now. American society is headed back to the 1950s. If it was a country that didn't have so much influence on the world it might not be so serious. But it's not my problem alone to wrestle with. It damn well stinks though.

I'm not sure America will go back to the 1950s, it could but I think we will see a different Trump as president than candidate. Question becomes how much of what he said was rhetoric to invigorate the Republican base and how much will carry forward into policy. I put a long post on another thread with more thoughts but I hope the reality of the job ahead of him will give him some pause to think first. His key appointments such as chief of staff may give us some clues, if it's Steve Bannin then we could be in for a rocky time!!

I am still angrier with all the so called democrats or other minorities who turned out in lower numbers than the last election, which ultimately cost her the presidency!! The Democrats should have put up a better candidate because any experienced, cleaner democrat would have beaten him!!! To a certain degree this outcome is self inflicted, they shouldn't have lost this election!!

Couldn't the Republican party have denied Trump by not recommending him to be there Candidate, when they had there Party Conference back in the summer??

He's already committed to stacking the Supreme Court with pro life judges so it will be back to the backstreet abortionists. If that's not going back to the 1950s I don't know what is. In one interview he even suggested women who have abortions should be punished. He's talked about imposition limits on the press. And with the NR As support it will be back to the old Wild West. If you want to keep givio him the benefit of the doubt that's your call SCO but I call a spade a spade. He's a very mean and nasty man.

Trump won't singularly be responsible for drawing up new policies, the men behind him will do that. And as pei said. Women's rights are one of the first things going back 60 years.

It's definitely the DNC's fault. The Democratic base wanted Bernie, they made an executive decision and forced Hillary on us dividing the party. And as always, the left is so easily divided because of its political correctness, which has become a blight on Society. The Right never split, they're always on the same page and they'll always back their man because that's how they do it..
Then there's Gary Johnson.. as appealing as the 3rd candidate may be, all they ever do is take votes from the Democratic party, those few states where he polled 2-3% would have made the difference in Hillary winning.

At the moment he cannot stack the Supreme Court, he has one place to fill only and even then they cannot just reverse Roe v Wade. The rest of the current court is generally split 4-4, but I doubt that they are split that way when it comes to abortion. Even if he does appoint a conservative judge then there still has to be a legal challenge to the original ruling and that will take ages to get to the Supreme Court.

What choice do we have but to give him some time???? It's great that people are upset but it won't change anything, 59m people voted for him all we have is a hope it won't be as bad a we fear. My opinion of him as a human being means sod all, I don't like him nor what he has said but he has been democratically elected.

Technically yes they could have done something. They could not deny him the candidacy as he won the vote in the primaries, but they could have put up an alternative. The problem is by doing that you run the risk of completely splitting the party and if they had been successful he would have stood as an independent and completely split the republican vote. Republicans more than anything else did not want Hillary, so they will take Trump and a win over that any day. A lot of Republicans have similar fears to democrats now, but they hope to be able to control him while in power.

Stateside, I feel like you do about the fringe candidates. A recent cnn article showed that the fringe candidate vote could have cost Hillary the election. I have no time for idealists who, faced with the prospect of a demagogue, stick by their bloody principles and say they'll vote for Jill Stein or that Johnson guy (who didn't even know what Aleppo was) because they want to vote according to their conscience. Look what you've done, you idiots!!

You ask what choice SCO? I hear you. I'm not living down there. I like to think if I were I'd be among the social activists who are demonstrating in the streets with "He's not my President" written on my forehead. Wouldn't do any tangible good, I know. But, I'd be able to sleep better at night. The 59m people who voted for him are who worry me. They bought into the platform of a demagogue and malevolent manipulator just like people in 1930s Germany did. But, that doesn't make it right. The person who invented the cliche "the people are always right" imo must have meant it as a practical joke, because it just aint true. They are often dead wrong.

Oh, and another thing I might do. Join the thousands of Americans who are so worried that on election night as the result was becoming apparent, the Canadian Immigration site crashed due to all the traffic on it from the U.S. No walls here.
