He had the right idea though. Piss poor tools to implement it at the time too, it has to be said, plus the unrelenting lack of understanding from the media driving the fans' discontent.
Later Scotland teams were reliant on the players he blooded at international level, even if they were ultimately unsuccessful. Who knows what MacBertie could have achieved if he was afforded some leeway by the rabid hound dogs of the headline-worshipping press and media.

Ally is a great bloke and was a great player, but he was not up to the job as a football manager.
His is another example of 'great players do not necessarily become great managers'.
