"The Government is set to boost spending on lawyers for immigrants by almost a third, despite growing anger over a string of controversial asylum rulings.

Labour ministers have tabled proposals for a “significant increase” in legal aid – the rates paid to lawyers who represent defendants including illegal migrants fighting to stay in Britain.

Under the plans, fees would increase by at least 10 per cent, with officials saying the move will help clear the 100,000-strong backlog of asylum cases.

They come amid anger over a string of recent immigration rulings, which have seen migrants given the right to stay in Britain under human rights rules.

In one case, a deportation against an Albanian criminal was overturned by a judge in part because of his son’s dislike for foreign chicken nuggets. In another, a Nigerian woman who failed eight times to secure asylum was granted the right to stay only after she joined a terrorist organisation.

The contentious verdicts have raised growing questions over the role of immigration tribunals and Britain’s ongoing membership of the European Convention on Human Rights."
