A man arrested with a flare gun and accelerant at the US Capitol yesterday afternoon was carrying a letter on the war in the Middle East.

The 28-year-old, identified by police as Austin Olson of Michigan, was arrested after trying to enter the visitor centre with the items.

After putting his belongings through the x-ray machine, he was found to be carrying a torch lighter, and two bottles of fuel. He also smelled like he doused part of his clothing with fuel.

He also had what appeared to be a manifesto and the letter on the Middle East expressing his views - though the Capitol Police did not say what they were."
