This is a good discussion on this thread. Thanks for sharing your experiences, stateside. I too have been plagued with bouts of depression throughout my life, so I also know of what I speak. While living in Sheffield, spent time at Whiteley Wood Clinic and even Middlewood. Both places now closed, WWC regrettably imo as it was a good place. I write about all this in my new book but I'm not going to promo it on here. as my identity would become known (actually 1 person already knows it). You'll need to pm me and I'll give you the site for more info and ordering.
To address thurnscoe's point, I have been near suicidal on 2 occasions, 1 of which was very much like that of the footballer. The "under the bus" route. Was in my right mind? Of course not. So no need to feel remorse. I was sick, as was this footballer. People need to understand that when individuals contemplate such acts they are not thinking straight and that is part of the illness. Coming down on people like this doesn't help. Understanding is needed.
Like I said, good discussion, because more education about mental illness and greater levels of awareness are needed.
