They mistakenly believed Putin would back down - a lotta reputable people/political experts "eating humble pie" and totally wrong with their "he won't do it" opinion!! 
IMO officials of the EU, NATO, US and UK not providing a real threat to Putin's actions and all "talking a good game" AS USUAL!! We now have to see how this all unfolds and who comes out of this crisis better than when it began. No winners in an all-out war TBH!! Apart from the arms dealers, "brokers of death and chaos".
