For all his loyalty to Liverpool Gerrard has been itching to get away from the club for half his career. Money has been as crucial a factor in keeping him there as devotion. I totally appreciate that he wanted to win leagues, and for some reason Liverpool have rarely looked liked being a contender since their last league title, so as one of the world's best players for a decade it must have been desperately frustrating for him. It seems a bit ironic that he might now get his move away, but go to a lesser club.
Then again, I wouldn't be surprised if he has a move to Man City or Chelsea lined up, even if it's through a back door scam like Beckham or Lampard's*. Lampard himself looked a spent force in his last year at Chelsea and leaving the big leagues looked like the right choice, but he's become a crucial part of City's title challenge this year. A change for Gerrard could reap the same rewards for both himself and his new club.
Makes me a bit sick though when I see any of these guys move to America at the end of their careers. They get paid an enormous amount at the top level and then have the cheek to go off for a last huge payday in the US, rarely showing any real commitment to being there. It was different in the past when players here didn't get so much and it made sense for high profile players to go to top up their bank balance and let them retire with some security, but now it's pure greed. If Gerrard is going to try to keep playing at the top, I hope he at least does it honestly.
*I know he's said he wouldn't play for a rival but he wouldn't be the first to pay lip service like this to the fans and then forget about it a few months down the line.
