That’s their position at the moment and that’s one that is a great difficulty for us because the position of the British government is that the UK must leave the European Union and Northern Ireland must come out of the customs union, whether they like it or not.
That creates huge difficulties for us because we want there to be a deal that respects the wishes of the people of Northern Ireland, and indeed the people in this Republic too."
Leo Varadkar lays it out in simple terms for the hard of thinking.
Also attempting to give the "toxic" DUP a "power of veto" in this Brexit process is a definite "no no" and demonstrates a great lack of understanding re the NI problem and, in fact, a huge disrespect to a population/people who didn't vote for Brexit. This fact has always been conveniently missed in the British narrative rather than respecting this position, much like the Scottish position where the opposition to leaving the EU is now well over 70% and I wish that a lot of those pro EU Scots would solidly back Scotindy as a natural recourse and a "kick in the teeth" to this Tory govt and the "turncoat" Scottish Tories who "turn on a sixpence" at the "drop of a hat" - say one thing one day and change it the next!!!! Nae values, nae principles, they can GTF!!
On a side note, has anybody listened to the pro Brexit comments made by Lord LIlley? He was one of Thatcher's hated RW backers/govt associates alongside the hated Norman Tebbit and, interestingly enough, both of them are pro Brexit backers - no surprise to me as I am familiar with the Tory politics of the 1980s where I hated both of them (and Thatcher!) with a passion!!! The thing that "struck me" on the odd occasion when the bbc have "rolled out" this man, Lilley, for a RW opinion, is an observation of his hateful kinda attitude and behaviour that has never changed since the 1980s when he was exactly the same!! IMO this kinda hateful attitude seems to be one of the standout symptoms of many pro Brexit people who I've observed down the years - full of angst and antagonism bordering on real aggression towards people who either oppose them or just don't understand their way of thinking on the subject!! In Lilley's case, his eyes are so dark/black - a really scary character but also another "oldie" in that age category that has predominated the Brexit vote and had a big say in this fiasco ever happening in the first place!! As for his "royal recognition", well I'd spit on the whole process that ever allowed such a RW moron to ever get near such a privileged title!!
