The British aircraft, shipbuilding, railway and motor vehicle industries were under no pressure to modernise their plants, upskill their managers and workers or reform when they could rely on captive domestic and imperial markets. Complacency ruled, and when those markets ended the obvious happened. It isn't coming back.
So why does it matter if these companies picking up the slack are foreign? I don't get why we have to throw the baby out with the bathwater.
