Brentford @ Deepdale 11/2/2017
#2
For the first time in 18 years Brentford left Deepdale without points, the run of six consecutives victories against North End also ended, more than enough revenge for the 5-0 defeat at Griffin Park last September although after 15 minutes it looked as though the hoodoo would continue.
North End made two changes Horgan and Robinson started instead of Big Mak and Gally who was injured.
Early shot by Collin tested Maxwell in the home goal, whilst Cunningham fired horribly wide at the other end. The Bees took the lead after 12 minutes when Field scored with a header from a corner, easy goal as nobody was within 50 yards of him when the corner was taken. Didn't take long for the home side to level when McGeady fired home from about 25 yards, have to say keeper Bentley seemed to go down in stages thought he should have done better. North End improved as the half went on although they were not brilliant, seemed to spend time admiring the Brentford passing especially outside the home area. McGeady was unlucky with a free kick from just outside the box which went just over however North End were saved by Maxwell shortly before half time when a Brentford player was in on goal.
North End took the lead early on in the second half when Robinson flicked home a McGeady cross, may have been a hint of offside about thuis but the home players and fans were not complaining. Brentford whose players all look comfortable on the ball probed away and were nearly rewarded when substitute Canos got in down the left hand side, his cross was flicked past Maxwell and looked to be going in but Cunningham made a great goal line clearence, with that went Brentford's last chance.
McGeady who was having a blinder all but sealed the points with 15 minutes to go by scoring from just inside the box after some fancy footwork confused the now hapless Brentford defence. Within a minute Hugill should have made it four when clear on goal his shot being charged down by Bentley who incidentally is the weak link in the Brentford defence, not a great keeper. The miss didn't matter as within a minute Horgan was put through by Pearson, he scored and always looked like scoring as he eased it passed Bentley.
North End were starting to take the piss and substitute May could have made it five when again he was one on one with the keeper but lack of match sharpness did for him and he could score. Brentford resuced the arrears in injury time when Colin fired home via a deflection and the underside of the bar.
McGeady standout player today, also cameo appearence by Barkuizen, after the initial poor 15 minutes not bad this by the Whites.
