Yesterday saw the start of the Championships in Tallinn, Estonia. Scotland are represented in both the Womens and Mens events, with England qualifying for the first time in the Womens event.


Scotland Women - Gina Aitken, Naomi Brown, Rowena Kerr, Rachel Hannen and Karina Aitken


England Women - Hetty Garnier, Angharad Ward, Naomi Robinson, Lucy Sparks and Niamh Fenton

In the Womens event, Scotland have 2 wins out of 2 and England have won 1 and lost 1.
Scores - Scotland 8 Estonia 2, Korea 9 England 3, Czech Republic 4 Scotland 6 and England 5 Russia 4.


Scotland Men - Bruce Mouat, Duncan Menzies, Derrick Sloan, Angus Dowell and Bobby Lammie

After 3 games in the Mens event, Scotland have won 2 and lost 1.
Scores - Scotland 9 USA 2, Switzerland 7 Scotland 4 and Scotland 5 Korea 4.

In the Womens competition, Scotland remain unbeaten to sit equal first in the round robin games, alongside Canada. England are fourth equal with 2 wins out of 4 games. Tomorrow England play Canada and Scotland take on Russia.
Scores - Switzerland 7 England 5, Sweden 5 Scotland 10, USA 2 Scotland 8 and England 6 Czech Republic 5.

The Scottish Mens team won again today to lie second equal in the table after 4 games. Tomorrow they play Norway and Russia.
Score - Italy 3 Scotland 5.

A poor day for the women today with defeats for both home teams. Scotland are now second equal with Switzerland, behind Canada, and England are in a four-way tie with Korea, Russia and USA in fifth place.
Scores - Canada 6 England 2, Scotland 5 Russia 7.

The Scotland Men continued their tournament with two wins to maintain their equal second position alongside Canada, just behind Switzerland.
Scores - Scotland 9 Norway 2, Russia 3 Scotland 9.

The Scots women play Canada and Switzerland tomorrow, where they will need at least one win to keep ahead of the chasing pack and set their stall out for a play-off place. England play Sweden and USA.

The Scots men have one game tomorrow against Canada, another tough one to keep up their challenge for a play-off place.

Again, not the best of days for the British Women's teams. Scotland started off badly against unbeaten Canada, but recovered to beat Switzerland, scoring a 5 in the last end, to give a false impression of a really tight game. England had an excellent first game against Sweden, but were absolutely hammered by USA in their second game, meaning that the English girls on 2 wins will be unable to qualify for the last four play-offs. Scotland are still equal second with Switzerland on 5 wins with 2 games to go.
Scores - Scotland 2 Canada 9, England 6 Sweden 7, England 3 USA 14 and Switzerland 6 Scotland 11.

Tomorrow England play Estonia and Scotland play Korea.

In the Men's competition, Scotland's challenge stuttered a bit with a heavy defeat to Canada by 4 shots to 10, but are still in third place with 5 wins out of 7.

One win from tomorrow's games against Sweden and Estonia will be enough to see them through to the play-offs.

And Then There Were Four

Scotland's Men lost 5-7 against Sweden in their first game, but that was enough to guarantee them a last four place with Sweden edging out Norway for the last place. Canada and Switzerland tied for first place and Scotland and Sweden tied for third spot. In the second game, Scotland beat Estonia 8-1 to finish the round robin section in third place with 6 wins and play Sweden, also on 6 wins, tomorrow in the 3 v 4 Play-off. The other Play-off is Canada (8 wins) v Switzerland (7 wins).

As a reminder to you all, the winner of Canada v Switzerland advances to the Gold Medal game, with the loser playing against the winner of Scotland v Sweden to decide the other Gold Medal contender. The loser of this game will play the loser of the Scotland v Sweden game in the Bronze Medal game. It's all quite simple really!

Get 'Em Out By Friday

With one game to go in the Women's championship tomorrow, Canada have already qualified for the 1 v 2 Play-off game, having won all of their 8 games so far. Then there is a fair old log-jam, with Korea, Scotland, Switzerland and Sweden on 5 wins, then Russia and USA on 4 wins. All six teams have a chance of grabbing the last 3 places, so three of them will have gone by tomorrow night.

Scores - Scotland 6 Korea 7 and Estonia 7 England 5.

Tomorrow's games are ones to savour with Scotland playing England, Estonia v Russia, Canada v Korea, Czech Republic v Sweden and USA v Switzerland. Theoretically there could be 6 teams on 5 wins, giving the organisers a huge headache arranging the tie-breaker games.

Over the weekend games all the British teams came home with a prize.

In the Men's event, Scotland lost to Sweden in the 3v4 play-off game and Canada beat Switzerland in the 1v2 game. Switzerland then defeated Sweden in the semi-final to set up a repeat of the previous games for the medal positions. Canada won the Gold by defeating Switzerland 6-3 and Scotland got their revenge over Sweden by 8-3 to come home with the Bronze Medal.

For the women, the latter games were almost a repeat of the pattern of the men's games. Canada beat Scotland in the 1v2 with Sweden beating Switzerland in the 3v4 game. Scotland then defeated Sweden in the semi-final and faced Canada in the Gold Medal game. Canada were in control throughout and won 8-2 to leave Scotland with the consolation of the Silver Medal. Switzerland gained revenge over Sweden in the Bronze Medal game, winning 7-6 after an extra end.

Meanwhile, England finished their tournament with 2 wins, against Russia and Czech Republic. They battled well throughout, but were generally outgunned and now have to go through the same qualification tournament for next year's event. They did have some consolation in that Niamh Fenton won the women's Sportsmanship Award, for the player who best exemplifies the traditional values of skill, honesty, fair play, sportsmanship and friendship, which is voted for by her fellow competitors.

Nice little result for all the teams involved!! I am sure it was a great experience for all the participants. Its a shame that curling isn't shown more on tv aside from the Olympics, where it get very good tv ratings!! Hopefully some success like this on the ice will give it more exposure!!
