Wigan Athletic have signed defender Luke Chambers on loan from Premier League side Liverpool until the end of the 2023-24 season.

The 19-year-old joins the Latics having made four first-team appearances for the Reds so far this term.

Chambers spent time on loan with Scottish Premiership side Kilmarnock last season, making 16 appearances.

"I've come here to help the team win games and get as far as we can in the league," he told the club website.

Wigan Athletic have signed forward Charlie Kelman on loan from Championship side Queens Park Rangers until the end of the season.

The 22-year-old came through Southend United's academy before joining QPR in the summer of 2020.

Kelman, who has previously had loan spells at Gillingham and Leyton Orient, has made 26 appearances for the Rs.

"It's an amazing feeling. I've played here in front of these fans before, and it's a massive, massive club," he said.

"Everyone knows what Wigan Athletic are about, and I feel very privileged to be here and I can't wait to get going."

Kelman is the Latics' third signing of the January transfer window, after Luke Chambers and Charlie Goode's arrivals at the club.

Wigan Athletic have released five players, including captain Josh Magennis.

The 33-year-old Northern Ireland international striker scored 11 goals in 89 league appearances after joining from Hull City in January 2022.

Goalkeeper Ben Amos, 34, defender Tom Pearce, 26, and forwards Stephen Humphrys, 26, and Charlie Wyke, 31, have also been released.

Wyke, who ended the season on-loan at Rotherham United, suffered a cardiac arrest in training in November 2021 and later thanked then Latics boss Leam Richardson and club doctor Jonathan Tobin for saving his life.

The League One side are in talks with defender Jason Kerr, 27, midfielders Jordan Jones, 29, and Callum McManaman, 33, and forward Harry McHugh, 21, over new deals.

Shaun Maloney's men finished the season 12th in the table after starting with an eight-point deduction.

Wigan Athletic goalkeeper Sam Tickle has signed a new four-year deal to remain with the League One club until the summer of 2028.

The 22-year-old England Under-21 international came through the Latics' academy and made his debut in October 2021.

He had a breakthrough campaign in the 2023-24 season, with 18 clean sheets in 52 appearances in all competitions.

“His attitude - both on and off the field - has been exemplary," manager Shaun Maloney said.

“Sam is an outstanding young talent and we’re looking forward to working with him over the next few years to help continue his development."

Tickle capped off a fine campaign by being named the club's player of the year, in addition to his efforts with England U21s.

He won his first cap against Luxembourg in March, keeping a clean sheet in their 7-0 victory.

Sporting director Gregor Rioch added: “He’s a phenomenal goalkeeper with the potential and desire to play at the very top, and we’re delighted that he’s committed his long-term future with us.”

Wigan Athletic have signed midfielder Michael Olakigbe on a season-long loan from Premier League side Brentford.

The England Under-20 international has made eight league appearances for Brentford, all as a substitute.

He spent the second half of last season on loan at Peterborough United, making five appearances in League One.

Olakigbe, 20, played for Queens Park Rangers and Fulham as a youth before signing for the Bees in 2022.

Wigan Athletic defender Jason Kerr has signed a new two-year contract at the Brick Community Stadium.

The 27-year-old joined from St Johnstone in August 2021 and helped Wigan to the League One title in his first season with the club.

However, injuries kept Kerr out of action for over a year before he returned to play 15 games last season.

“I’m absolutely over the moon to extend my stay with Wigan Athletic," he said.

"I’ve really enjoyed my football under the gaffer [Sean Maloney] in the last couple of months, and I’m very excited about what the future holds."

He added: “The club really stuck by me throughout a tough period in my career, and now I want to show my gratitude and give back to everyone who has supported me.

“We’ve got a young group, and hopefully I can continue to support the lads both on and off the field. We’ve got a squad full of talented players, and we’re all determined to have another successful season of progression.”

The Latics finished 12th in League One last season.

Wigan Athletic have signed Liverpool and Scotland defender Calvin Ramsay on loan for the 2024-25 season.

Ramsay, 20, had spells at Bolton Wanderers and Preston North End last season.

He moved to Anfield from Aberdeen in 2022 but is yet to make a league appearance for the club.

Ramsay said he was "over the moon" about the deal adding there was an "instant connection" with Shaun Maloney when he met the Latics boss two weeks ago.

He is the second player to arrive on loan from a Premier League club after Michael Olakigbe joined for next season from Brentford.

Wigan Athletic winger Callum McManaman has signed a new one-year deal to extend his third spell with the club until the end of the 2024-25 season.

The 33-year-old returned to the club for his latest stint ahead of last season having initially made his debut during his first spell in 2011.

Having won the FA Cup with Wigan two years later, he then spent time with West Bromwich Albion and Sunderland before returning to the Latics in 2018.

"Ever since I returned last year, I have been grateful to the gaffer, the fans, my teammates and the club in general for helping me enjoy my football once again and get my career back on track," he told the club website.

Wigan Athletic have signed Chelsea winger Dion Rankine on a three-year deal.

The 21-year-old, who came through the Chelsea academy, was on loan at Wigan's League One rivals Exeter City last season, where he made 36 appearances in all competitions.

Rankine becomes Wigan's third signing of the summer after defender Michael Olakigbe and defender Calvin Ramsay joined on loan from Brentford and Liverpool respectively.

Wigan Athletic have signed defender Will Aimson from fellow League One side Exeter City for an undisclosed fee.

The 30-year-old joins on a two-year contract with the Latics having spent last season with the Grecians.

Prior to his move to St James Park, Aimson had spells with Blackpool, Bury, Plymouth and Bolton Wanderers.

"There is a journey and a plan that is commencing here, and I want to be part of that," he told the club website, external.

Aimson has twice won promotion from League Two during his career, first with Blackpool through the play-offs in 2017 and then again with Bury in 2019 prior to the Shakers' expulsion from the English Football League.

He joins having made 43 appearances for Exeter last season, scoring five goals.
