My mistake then I didn't really follow the story after the initial report of him being involved in a 'crash' which kind of implied to me that he was driving at the time and that's what I assumed

People need to realize that when someone is depressed or otherwise affected by some form of mental illness they are not thinking straight and that is part of the illness. He is not a "prick" because he tried to commit a form of suicide that may have involved another person. He is someone who needs help.

Good one, imre. My last post was the only one recently where the serious side of me came through though. Britain is probably no different from Canada. 1 in 4 people will suffer from some form of mental illness during their lives. Yet, budgetary allocation doesn't come close to meeting this need. 25% sufferers.In Canada, only 7% of health budgets allocated to it. Story about the same in UK. We need to start by removing the stigma then allocating the dough. Preaching done.

My problem isn't with the depression or that he wanted to commit suicide, my problem is that he wanted to commit in the messiest way he could, on purpose, and appears unremorseful

Depression is definitely an internal struggle, I suffered several years with it before I managed to turn it around, still not entirely sure it ever really 'goes away' you just learn coping skills and how to manage. Drugs such as Lexapro helped me greatly with both anxiety & depression, the most important thing is to try and get help, and Carlisle is and was definitely in a position to do such a thing, but again depression can xxxx with you in such ways you wont even get out of bed or bathe appropriately.

I completely agree though, that his concept of ending his suffering was selfish, not only to his own loved ones left behind but to cause tragedy in others lives also. It is amongst many mental health issues that we've barely even scratched the surface on, we're so far off understanding the human brain and the effects of chemical imbalances it's ridiculous. Plenty of money for the war machine though... but anyway. As pei said budgeting should be made available. It seems reflective of society, the shittier it gets and the harder peoples grind becomes, depression rises.

This is a good discussion on this thread. Thanks for sharing your experiences, stateside. I too have been plagued with bouts of depression throughout my life, so I also know of what I speak. While living in Sheffield, spent time at Whiteley Wood Clinic and even Middlewood. Both places now closed, WWC regrettably imo as it was a good place. I write about all this in my new book but I'm not going to promo it on here. as my identity would become known (actually 1 person already knows it). To address thurnscoe's point, I have been near suicidal on 2 occasions, 1 of which was very much like that of the footballer. The "under the bus" route. Was in my right mind? Of course not. So no need to feel remorse. I was sick, as was this footballer. People need to understand that when individuals contemplate such acts they are not thinking straight and that is part of the illness. Coming down on people like this doesn't help. Understanding is needed.

Like I said, good discussion, because more education about mental illness and greater levels of awareness are needed.
