Not sure it really qualifies as a shock or an upset these days, but Sri Lanka continue their total all-format cricketing implosion with an opening-game defeat to Namibia. Meanwhile, Netherlands edge a low-scoring thriller against UAE. Scotland and Ireland both in action early Monday morning.

I know the Windies aren't what they used to be, but that's got to be one of the game's biggest shocks. Well not the game of cricket, but the tournament.

Bigger shock than Sri Lanka losing yesterday.

Week One Roundup A

Namibia and Scotland have both picked up where they left off at last year's tournament, the former piling the misery onto Sri Lanka on Sunday and the latter eclipsing it on Monday with an even bigger (and absolutely comprehensive) upset of West Indies, George Munsey excelling with the bat and Mark Watt with the ball as a side full of CPL stars failed to produce the same fireworks as the globetrotting Caribbean T20 titans of the last decade. Tuesday features a must-win encounter for Sri Lanka against UAE, while Namibia and Netherlands will duel for pole position in the group. Scotland, meanwhile, are back in action on Wednesday morning with the big derby versus a sub-par Ireland.

Leading Run-Scorers

1. Sikandar Raza (ZIM) - 82
2. George Munsey (SCO) - 66
3. Jan Frylinck (NAM) - 44
4. Muhammad Waseem (UAE) - 41
5. Jason Holder (WI) - 38

Leading Wicket-Takers

1. Mark Watt (SCO) - 3 [for 12]
2. Bas de Leede (NED) - 3 [for 19]
3. Blessing Muzarabani (ZIM) - 3 [for 23]
4. Junaid Siddique (UAE) - 3 [for 24]
5. Josh Little (IRE) - 3 [for 24]

Despite another late wobble, the Netherlands made it across the line in another low-scoring affair versus Namibia. Sri Lanka also suffered a mid-innings collapse courtesy of the fifth ever T20 World Cup hat-trick (the thirty-ninth in all internationals, and first by an Emirati bowler) from Karthik Meiyappan, but cruised home regardless. However, Namibia will back themselves to make it through the group with a final game versus UAE and a strong net run-rate, while Netherlands will have to hold their own against Sri Lanka or risk missing out.

Week One Roundup B

A punishing setback for Scotland, who posted an impressive 176 - opener Michael Jones recording the biggest innings of any Associate batsman at a T20 World Cup, with 88 - and had Ireland on the ropes at 65-4 halfway through the chase, only to succumb to a nine-over onslaught from Curtis Campher and George Dockrell that carried the men in green home with an over to spare. Coupled with the West Indies bouncing back, every team in Group B now stands on 2 points, and each of Friday's matches will be winner-takes-all, though Scotland and Zimbabwe hold the trump card in the event of washouts. In Group A, Namibia should be quietly confident of seeing off UAE and progressing with a strong run-rate, but current leaders Netherlands are paradoxically precarious at the top as they contemplate the win, tie or washout they'll need to go through at the expense of resurgent opponents Sri Lanka.

Elsewhere, everyone's favourite Russell Brand lookalike Reece Topley has been ruled out of the tournament for England with an ankle injury.

Leading Run-Scorers

1. Michael Jones (SCO) - 106
2. Curtis Campher (IRE) - 99
3. Sikandar Raza (ZIM) - 96
4. Jan Frylinck (NAM) - 87
5. Pathum Nissanka (SRI) - 83

Leading Wicket-Takers

1. Alzarri Joseph (WI) - 6
2. Jason Holder (WI) - 5 [for 26]
3. Bas de Leede (NED) - 5 [for 37]
4. Blessing Muzarabani (ZIM) - 5 [for 61]
5. Wanindu Hasaranga (SRI) - 4

A cracking finale to Group A saw two late pinch-hitting shows fall short of their target, resulting in heartbreak for one underdog and elation for two others. Max O'Dowd's valiant effort to single-handedly drag the Netherlands over the line against Sri Lanka was doomed to failure, but the Dutch players and fans were later treated to the sight of David Wiese attempting the same after his Namibia side dug themselves a colossal hole against the United Arab Emirates, and achieving the same result. Namibia are thus eliminated, putting the Netherlands through to their first main group stage since 2014 and granting the UAE their first World Cup victory, which was wholly deserved. Sri Lanka will be the first qualifying team in England's group, joined by Group B's runners-up tomorrow.

West Indies vs Ireland is the early match on Friday; barring a washout, the winner of that match can expect to progress at the expense of the loser of Scotland vs Zimbabwe.
