Port Vale have signed defender Lewis Cass on a permanent basis following a loan spell at the club last season.

The 22-year-old made 27 appearances for Vale in 2021-22 before his season was cut short by injury in January.

Cass will join from Newcastle United when his contract with the Premier League side expires on 1 July.

"His injury was a crushing blow for both him and the club but I'm happy to see that he has come back stronger than before," said manager Darrell Clarke.

Cass was a regular in Newcastle's under-23 side but never made a first team appearance for the Magpies, and spent the 2020-21 season on loan at Hartlepool United, helping them to secure promotion to League Two.

He joins Vale as they prepare for their first season in League One after gaining promotion through the play-offs at Wembley against Mansfield Town on 28 May.

Director of football, David Flitcroft, said: "It is fantastic to see Lewis back at the club and we can't wait to see him join with the boys again here at Vale Park."

The length of Cass' deal with Vale has not been disclosed.

Port Vale's promotion-winning goalkeeper Aidan Stone has signed a contract extension tying him to Vale Park until June 2024.

The 22-year-old signed a one-year deal, with the option of an additional 12 months, when he arrived on a free transfer from Mansfield last summer.

But the club have opted to now add on a further year's extension.

"Aidan's at a great age - and goalies mature and get better as they get older," said Vale boss Darrell Clarke.

"You can see from his performances at the start of the season to the end of the season when he was cemented in the team how fast he develops.

"There are areas of the game that he needs to work on and continue to develop and we're hoping to make him an even better keeper, and if he keeps progressing the way he has been throughout last season, we'll have a real top keeper on our hands."

Stone made 28 appearances last term, becoming a fixture over the second half of the campaign and keeping 11 clean sheets, capped by his penalty save in the play-off semi-final second-leg shootout win over Swindon Town.

Port Vale have signed Belgian midfielder Funso Ojo following his release by Aberdeen.

The 30-year-old spent three years with the Scottish club, but was on loan at Wigan during the 2020-21 season.

He is Vale's second signing since promotion to League One, following the arrival of Lewis Cass from Newcastle.

"We think that Funso is the type of player that can conduct and orchestrate them on the pitch," said Vale director of football David Flitcroft.

Ojo began his career in the Netherlands with PSV Eindhoven and played for four other clubs before coming to England to join Scunthorpe United in 2017.

He played 80 league games for the Iron before joining Aberdeen in the summer of 2019.

"As a club, we've been in League Two for a long time, and we're about to make the step up to a league that has got some big hitters and teams with fantastic managers and squads that have League One experience," said Flitcroft.

"You look at that and you want to want to make sure that we add that experience to strengthen what we've already got and we also want to add to the intelligence levels of the players.

"We've got someone who has been at the level and that's key - and it's important that we look for and can attract a player with that kind of profile."

Details of Ojo's contract have not been disclosed.

"He brings with him a lot of brilliant League One and Championship experience," said Port Vale director of football David Flitcroft.

"On the field he is a top player as well, he's scored some really important goals in his career, he loves to get forward as he has an excellent attacking instinct and intent."

The length of Massey's deal with the Valiants has not been disclosed.

Port Vale, who clinched promotion to England's third tier with victory in the League Two play-off final against Mansfield Town in May, host Fleetwood Town in their season opener on Saturday.

Port Vale have signed former Watford defender Derek Agyakwa after a successful trial period with the club.

The 20-year-old made two first-team appearances for Watford in his two years at Vicarage Road before being released earlier in the summer.

Agyakwa, who left Dutch side FC Twente 2019, also had a loan spell at Como in Italy's third tier in 2020-21.

"Derek is coming in as a player that we can help to develop and grow," said Port Vale boss Darrell Clarke.

"He is someone that we can develop for the future and is a somebody that we are looking to build into the player we know he is capable of being."

Agyakwa, whose length of contract with Port Vale has not been disclosed, was signed after featuring in pre-season friendlies against Kidsgrove Athletic and Dundee United and spending time with the League One club during their training camp in Spain.

Smith, who made his debut in August 2016, has played 47 games this season.
