I do not understand the penalty system. It seems to me that some get away with stuff and Elise doesn't, in the Olympics, in any case.

Elise Christie was hit by both Sod and Murphy in the Olympics - if it can go wrong it will. As Snooty says there's so much physical contact, it could go either way for almost all the skaters. At a corner in football there could 3 penalties to the attackers or 3 free-kicks to the defenders - it depends on which incident the referee sees first. Same in short track. Anyway no GB athletes through to the Quarter-finals.
In the curling event both the GB Men and the GB Women have Semi-final Qualification in their own hands. The Women play Canada at 00.05 and both teams have a chance to progress. Korea have already qualified with 6 wins and Sweden, GB and Japan have 5 wins. Depending on results tomorrow there could be 6 teams tied on 5 wins at the end of the day, with only 3 qualifying. There is a complicated system of ranking the teams on wins against the other tied teams and the Draw Shot Challenge, then maybe the GDP per person of each country
, then play-offs or the 3 corners a penalty if no outright decision on qualification is reached. GB should just avoid the hassle and beat Canada to solve the problem - easy!
The Men, playing USA at 05.05, are in a similar position. Sweden have qualified in 1st position with 7 wins, followed by Canada, GB and Switzerland on 5 wins. This time there are 5 teams who could finish on 5 wins with the same ranking system coming into operation. Again, a win for GB would lead to automatic qualification.
There's a really exciting day ahead for the 2-woman Bob for the GB duo of Mica McNeill and Mica Moore. 2 excellent runs this morning sees them in 6th place, perhaps out of contention for Gold and Silver, but only 0.16 seconds behind the 3rd placed team. They've nothing to lose, so go for it, girls, and give the GB Bobsleigh Federation a smack in the face for withdrawing your funding.
Andrew Musgrave and Andrew Young represent GB in the Men's Cross Country Team Sprint at 08.50 with the Final at 10.30.
Jamie Nicholls sets off 1st in Heat 1 of the Snowboard Big Air Qualifying Runs at 00.30 with Rowan Coultas at the end of the run. Billy Morgan is in the 2nd heat at 02.45. There are 2 runs in each Heat and successful athletes will be in the Final on Saturday, consisting of 3 runs.

The GB Women curlers kept their part of the bargain, beating Canada 6-5 after a short stone by Canada in the last end. GB were never in front until the last end, so perfect timing from them. Not only did GB qualify but their win kept Canada out of the Semi-finals. Korea v Japan and Sweden v GB are the 2 Semi-finals being played at 11.05 on Friday.
The Men were well beaten 4-10 by USA, compounded by losing 4 shots in the 8th end, after being only 4-6 down with last stone. That last stone was well short, leading to a concession by GB. The upshot is that GB now have to play Switzerland in a tie-breaker at 00.05 tomorrow, with the winner having the dubious privilege of playing Sweden in the Semi-final tomorrow at 11.05. The other Semi-final is between Canada and USA.
Bobsleighers Mica McNeill and Mica Moore fell away slightly in their 3rd run, but held it together in the 4th to finish an excellent 8th position. If they could improve their starts by 0.25 seconds, they could have been fighting for a medal. Roll on Beijing in 4 years' time!
Of our 3 Snowboarders, only Billy Morgan managed to qualify for the Final 3 runs between 01.00 and 02.00 on Saturday. Rowan Coultas only missed out on qualification by 0.5 points with Jamie Nicholls a further 3.25 points behind.

At the age of 34, Emily Sarsfield makes her Olympic debut in the Ladies' Ski Cross Seeding Runs at 01.00 tomorrow. The races will be starting at 01.00 on Friday, with the Final at 02.20 the same day.

A bit of a disaster for the GB Men this morning, losing 5 shots in the 9th end to Switzerland, leaving a deficit of 5-9. They started the 10th end but ran out of scoring stones and conceded. The fateful end started off reasonably well but they got into a right old guddle, allowing the Swiss to take control of the end and play an excellent last stone for the 5. The win didn't do too much for the Swiss who were well beaten by Sweden in the Semi-final by 3-9 after 8 ends. The other Semi-final between Canada and USA was a tense affair, with the Americans winning 5-3. Yet another last stone draw, this time by Canada, was yards short to hand the USA 2 shots against the hammer and allowed USA to dominate the last end. The Bronze Medal game between Switzerland and Canada is tomorrow at 06.35 and the Gold Medal game between Sweden and USA will be at the same time on Saturday.
The GB Women will play Sweden at 11.05 tomorrow morning with the winners advancing to the Gold Medal match at 00.05 on Sunday against the winners of Korea v Japan. The 2 losers will play off for the Bronze Medal at 11.05 on Saturday.
Dave Ryding finished 9th in the Men's Slalom, only half a second behind the Bronze Medallist. Laurie Taylor was 26th.

What I don't understand is this......
If the USA got through to the men's semis because, having tied in the table with GB and Switzerland, they had beaten both teams so went through because of that. Then why did GB not get straight through, having already beaten the Swiss. Why was there a need for a tie break/play off?

A very good question, Snooty, and there is a very good answer in the Rules - "Where three or more teams are tied, the record of the games between the tied teams shall provide the ranking (should this procedure provide a ranking for some teams but not all, then the record of the games between the remaining teams that are still tied shall determine the ranking)" . As usual it looks fairly straightforward, but it would seem that this Rule has not been applied in this instance. It might be that there is another Rule that changes this Rule. If so, it has been very well hidden elsewhere in the 66 pages of light bedtime reading.
I hope you're not saying that there is a bias against GB in the Ice Sports.
Personally, I blame Brexit/Theresa May/Global Warming/Donald Trump (delete where applicable)

According to the Olympic Competition Format (different rules to the WCF Rules I quoted) "If two or more teams are tied for a qualifying position, one session of tie-breakers will be played to decide the qualifiers." Presumably, that means that one tie-breaker MUST be played, even if it's not necessary. Just what they would have done if there had been 5 teams tied for 2 places, God Only Knows!
Bizarrely, the OCF rules bow to the WCF rules on ranking in every regard except that one instance. I can only think they have a timing issue with extra games, even though there are only 3 games tomorrow, 2 on Saturday and 1 on Sunday. Plenty of manoeuvre there for an extra game or two, I would say.
