A bad bang on the noggin for big Simo in the line of duty. He deserves some credit tonight. On the whole though, aside from a couple of bits of slackness in letting their men get away the defence restricted St. Johnstone to hopeful long shots. We were in control for the first quarter of the match and pretty much the whole second half, and the only problem was creating that final opening. Aird's crossing is still woeful, but I'll lay off as it was his ball in that we scored from, and we're clearly not doing nearly enough set piece work in training because corners and free kicks were pretty rubbish again. Our link up play was much better in the 2nd half though, and that meant we didn't have to rely on set pieces for chances.

Like ICT, St. Johnstone showed they could play a lot better than anyone we've met in the Championship, but they still wanted to sit back and pack their defence and hit us on the break, and we need to deal with that a bit better. We haven't dropped points to an opponent that actually looked any good this season, but the fact we have dropped those points shows teams don't need to be good, they just need to target our obvious weak points. We're hopefully sorting them out gradually, and this will be a confidence booster - which is good as long as it doesn't lead to overconfidence and sloppiness.

One other thing we obviously need to work on: shielding the ball in the corner. We tried that between Miller and Macleod and on each of the 3 times I counted we managed to lose the ball to the opponent without even getting it out of play.

El Car, you've dropped points at home this season to both Edinburgh teams- have they both not looked any good this season?- oh wait, they don't have to be any good, just target yer weak points which is- yer no actually very good value for money in respect of the cash the club is paying out on a weekly basis for pretty pish poor performances on the park, reflected by tonight's attendance. FFs, hearts had 15500 against Cowdenbeath, Livingstone and Dumbarton.

Talking pish again I see.

How many did Hearts have on a freezing cold Tuesday night in a council televised cup match that isn't on the season ticket?

If you want to make comparisons, at least apply similar parameters. Doh

Looked good against us? Nope. Hibs played some nice stuff through us in our PT Cup game until we changed formation, but in league games you lot and Hibs just stuck 2 banks of 4 in and around your penalty area and picked us off on the break. The only difference from teams we faced in the 2nd half of last season was the quality of finishing. The football wasn't actually very good at all from anyone involved, nor was it when we drew at Alloa.

This was a midweek diddy cup game in a season when half our regular season ticket holders have boycotted. I don't see why the attendance would be a surprise to anyone.

I was not impressed by that faffing around by the corner flag in the last few minutes, on three occasions, iirc.

A corner is an opportunity to score a goal. Those opportunities should be taken.

When it is late in the game, have our defenders back in their defensive positions, to be on guard against an opposition breakout and counter-attack. Meanwhile, have our strikers in the box to take their chances in scoring from the corner kick. That is their job to do, after all.

Midfielders can hover by the 18 yard line, to cover counter-attacks, or move in to meet the corner kick.

Although it was from a cross, not a corner, Lewis Macleod's goal was an excellent example of a player running into the box unmarked to score.
Well Done, lad !  Thumb up
