York City have appointed former Notts County and AFC Wimbledon boss Neal Ardley as their new manager.

The 51-year-old, who spent 11 playing for Wimbledon, has agreed a three-year deal at the National League side.

He replaces Michael Morton who was sacked by the Minstermen last month after a winless start to the season.

Ardley spent more than six years in charge of AFC Wimbledon, guiding them to League One for the first time after winning the 2016 League Two play-offs.

He joined Notts County in November 2018 but could not stop them from being relegated from the English Football League for the first time.

The following season Notts were third in the National League before the season was curtailed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

They did make the re-scheduled play-offs but were beaten by Harrogate Town in the final, with Ardley sacked in March 2021.

His most recent role saw spend the past two seasons on charge at Solihull Moors, guiding the club to third place in the National League in 2022 before losing in the play-off final.

He left by mutual consent in June after a mid-table finish last season.

Ardley made much difference then. Have to wonder, even if wages are a tad above the breadline, how non-league clubs pay off these contracts or if they are bright enough to put "end of the month and your gone" into the deal. Can't think York will be flooded with applicants for this job at this time of year. That York will be flooded is a given.

Could say they weren't Ousing in confidence

York City have parted company with Neal Ardley just under six months into his spell as manager.

The 51-year-old, who signed a three-year deal in September, won only 10 of his 34 games and leaves with York just a point above the bottom four.

Ardley, who has managed AFC Wimbledon, Notts County and Solihull Moors, failed to win any of his last four matches, latterly losing at Barnet on Saturday.

Assistant manager Tony McMahon will take interim charge of the team.

"We'd like to thank Neal for his contribution to this incredible club both on the pitch and behind the scenes," co-chairs Matt and Julie-Anne Uggla said.

"We wish him well for the future. We now look forward to the next chapter for York City. We are working hard to be able to update the fans on the new appointment."

Former boss Michael Morton left after a 4-1 defeat by Ebbsfleet, with York second bottom after seven games.

The Minstermen had turned to Ardley for the role after his success in previous jobs - he took AFC Wimbledon to League One and guided both Notts County and Solihull Moors to National League promotion finals.

However, the Epsom-born former Wimbledon and Watford defender was unable to replicate those successes at York.

York play Wealdstone at home on Saturday in the National League.
