Stairs and Mark - at last names to the main Admin's, first of all good job on what you've done so far. Fine, you've held your hands up and admitted you've knee jerked your reaction and you'll take steps to sort it to hopefully most folks satisfaction.

I asked Ams a couple of times (here and another thread) who your target market is. Maybe I should ask you (or you should ask yourselves) who your target income streams are and are you targeting the right one's? Trying to get a bunch of (mostly) hairy back-sided football fans to behave like church choir boys on a forum like this isn't going to happen if that's the kind of advertiser you are hoping to attract. You need to be looking for the kind of advertiser that is more open to a few ribald comments, the kind that is more likely to be associated with sports rather than the type that is more likely to advertise on say Faceache. You've both made comments that come right out of the Marketing for Dummies genre of books. Put them down and get hold of the Selling for Dummies book first. You've established the needs of most of your current members. Now establish the needs of potential advertisers that fit that model, not the other way round.

There's got to be at least, what, 4,5, 6-10 forums for every league club that has a decent size following of fans to post on? You aren't easily going to move half or a tenth of them over here (short to medium term) even if some of them might read the drivel we all write. Toning things down a bit may or may not tempt a few more to sign up, time will tell.

PS. I don't need my mates on here to chat to. I can do that in person, at the match, down the pub, on the phone or by email and most of them wouldn't consider joining any forum anyway. They don't even read them.

Good luck - don't put the cart before the horse.

Meanwhile Amchaff is exercising her right to free speech while I post the drivel above. Doh

What a fuss about not very much! No, not the banning of certain words, but the inference that some people couldn't post properly without typing a swear word.

I'm usually positive about most things, but if I did want a bit of a rant, by the time I typed it out, I'd have lost interest in swearing. To me, swearing is an immediate reaction to something that annoys me, not a considered response. Don't get me wrong, I know all the words and I've used them all, but not in cold blood.

I realise that I might be the exception that proves the rule, so go ahead and swear if you wish, just don't be surprised if I don't. It really won't make any difference to how or what I post. Carry on, folks. Cool

I can understand why Mark and Stairs want to cense certain words being used on this site:

1. They want to appeal and attract a wider audience to increase the membership of the site so that means all ages and everyone who is interested in sport and want to debate with other people about all sports or a specific sport and that's going to be difficult when there is strong swearing and sexual content posted which can be offensive to women or anyone in general.

2. If the forum gets a highly good reputation then it will spread by word of mouth and social networking e.g Facebook/Twitter and more people will be interested and sign up. More members will mean more Mods but also more members will attract businesses interesting in sponsoring the site to keep it financially functioning.

I have tried plugging the site on Twitter and Facebook and told a lot of people about it and its up to them to sign up if they are interested you can't force them to. But the more attractive and friendly it is then more people will.

Mark and Stairs the one problem you are going to have is attracting football fans from clubs who don't post on here because most of them will use the clubs official forums to post on. So I think you need to attract them.

Laugh  I had worried whether Arsenal and Scunthorpe would be innocent victims of the filtering but fortunately not.  Must admit I had been tempted to add Wolves  Rolleyes

I never swear, especially at football. Whistle
(MNt, don't ask your Dad!)

I find non-sweary misogynism far more off-putting on football forums than swearing.
