MANAGER

Michael Joseph McCarthy (born 7 February 1959) is a professional football manager, pundit, and former player. He is currently the head coach of Blackpool.

McCarthy began his playing career at Barnsley in 1977, and he later had spells at Manchester City, Celtic, Lyon, and finally Millwall, retiring in 1992. Born and raised in England, he represented the Republic of Ireland, for whom he earned 57 caps and played at UEFA Euro 1988 and the 1990 FIFA World Cup.

McCarthy managed Millwall and then the Republic of Ireland. He guided the country to the knockout stage of the last 16 of the 2002 FIFA World Cup. He later managed Sunderland, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Ipswich Town. McCarthy began a second tenure as manager of the Republic of Ireland national team in November 2018, leaving after having guided the team to a UEFA Euro 2020 playoff place. He then had brief spells at Cypriot club APOEL and Cardiff City. He has also been a television pundit and commentator, including for the BBC and Virgin Media Television.

In The Dressing Room

Manager Ryan Lowe confirmed in his pre-match press conference that Greg Cunningham will miss the remainder of the season with a hamstring injury.

Liam Lindsay, who has been absent in recent weeks, is back in full training and will be in contention to feature, while striker Ched Evans will be assessed ahead of the game.

All players who were away on international duty during the past fortnight have returned to Euxton unscathed.

Mick McCarthy’s side arrive at Deepdale in need of points if they’re to avoid the drop come May, as they currently sit four points below the dotted line.

The season started with former PNE man Michael Appleton in charge and, after his departure in the middle of January, the experienced McCarthy came in and has since overseen two wins.

With teams at either end of the division still to come in the Seasiders’ end of season run-in, there could be plenty of ups and downs between now and 8th May.

One To Watch


One man the Tangerines will be looking towards to help them escape the threat of relegation is forward Jerry Yates.

The 26-year-old striker has 12 goals to his name in all competitions so far this season – including the two which he scored in the reverse fixture against North End back in October.

As the club’s main source of goals, Yates will be desperate to add more to his tally before the end of the campaign, especially given the ACL injury which Gary Madine suffered before the international break.

Experienced Premier League official Andre Marriner will be taking charge of Saturday’s Lancashire derby.

It will be the first time he has refereed a PNE match since January 2021, when North End lost 1-0 on the road against Sheffield Wednesday.

So far this season, Marriner has shown 57 yellow cards and two reds in his 17 matches.

Hard to call this one heaven knows who'll turn up the Blackpool who won 6-1 then promptly lost the next game 4-1 or the free flowing passing North End side which has yet to make an appearance this season, question is how many times will Mr Fantastic say fantastic

It's always nice to beat your local rivals, especally as you may be sending them towards reegation, not a terminal result for Pool but makes survival a little bit tougher
Great early atmosphere got even better when the goals went in, couple of changes for us, Lindsay and Hughes returned after injury sio for the first time in a while we had the early season defence.
First half
Both sides started well, they probably had a couple of half chances , Lyons was slightly unlucky when his goal bound effort was headed away for a corner, then the action was down the other end, Maxwell had already dealt well wih a shot from Parrott but he had little chance with Potts blitzer from the corner of the box, never celebrate a goal against you ex club, not Brad celebrated in front of the away fanns, his next touch was to clatter a Pool player picking up a yellow.
We played some decent stuff once we went ahead and the second was not far behind, free kick edge of the box, Maxwell didn't do himself any favours shpuld really have done better with free kick as Whiteman curled it round the wall and in it went.
In a game like this the next goal would be crucial. We managed easily to get through to half time without much alar, Pool looked destined for relegation on te first 45 minutes.
Second half
Three substitutes for Pool as they started the half better but were soon three down when we broke down the left Fernandez surging run, ball into Cannon not the greatest control however he adjusted well and right footed from 18 yards side footed the ball into the net, personal view superb goal.
Game over, pressure off and Pool decided to give it a goal way to late both wingers caused his issues and Rogers in midfield looked a more than decent player, they had a couple of chances which possibly they should have taken, if any had been taken it may have made it a different gam. Delap blocked by Maxwell should have done better
Right at the depth Yates pulled one back for the visitors met with a whimper of applause.
Three points and bragging rights for months to come

"As derbies go, it was frantic at times, of course, but I'm delighted for the lads because they've shown loads of commitment and character.

"It was going to be crucial, whoever got the first goal, so for us to get it so early was great. After that, the lads carried out the game plan superbly.

"We know it's so tough to stay in and around the chasing pack, but that's what we'll try and do.

"We've still got three home games (out of seven) left to get results so we can get after those above us, so then it doesn't necessarily look as bad as it is."

Blackpool boss Mick McCarthy told BBC Radio Lancashire:

"I thought the free-kick for the second was a bit soft but we've got to block it. It went through the wall - someone's got to head that.

"2-0 down and they're playing well then and it became really difficult for our team.

"There were two great crosses from Hubby (James Husband) and we've got to score one. If we do score one it just changes the course of the game, like their first goal changes it and gets them up.

"Our leading goalscorer has got 12 (goals), someone else has got three and the next has got two. It's a real problem for us putting the ball in the net."
