The view of Mac

The League Cup comes around again after going out to Salford last season we get an early chance to lose to Sunderland this season.
The disenchantment with the occupier of the manager's seat now coming to a head although he will get a free hit on this as both sides will no doubt make millions of changes from the first game on Saturday.
Will we get the chance to see Alan Browne in a different shirt other than ours, personally think he would have signed a new contract if fantastic had not been manager.
Will Mads be on the naughty step after messaging Liam Millar and telling him that it's great to see him on the wing again, our clown wanted Millar to play wing back.
Suspect apathy amongst the home support on Tuesday.

Last cup meeting was in the FA Cup in 2007 we won 1-0 two league cup games in 1995 in the days when it was home and away in the early round Sunderland won 4-3

Will add extras but will do a proper thread for the league game

It remains to be seen how many changes interim manager Mike Marsh might make to the side which faced Sheffield United on Friday night, but Carabao Cup action does tend to see squads utilised.

There may be an opportunity for Kaine Kesler-Hayden to make his full PNE debut, while there will be a number of other players pushing for a chance to impress.

Ali McCann won’t be available due to injury, whereas Layton Stewart is unlikely to be ready for a return.

The Black Cats

Sunderland will arrive at Deepdale feeling good, having opened their season with a victory over Cardiff City at the weekend.

There’s a new man in the dugout for the Black Cats this campaign. Former Lorient manager Regis Le Bris took over in the summer, after they finished the previous season under interim management.

There will, of course, be a return to Deepdale for club legend and 400 Club member Alan Browne, who made his Sunderland debut at the weekend.

The Officials

Referee: Ollie Yates
Assistant Referees: Danny Jarvis and Mark Cunliffe
Fourth Official: Dale Baines

Ollie Yates will referee the first PNE game of his career on Tuesday night.

Yates has been refereeing in League One and League Two since 2016/17, and he began the new campaign in charge of Wrexham’s 3-2 victory over Wycombe Wanderers.
MACS UP DATED VIEW

Well what a to do, the king is dead long live the temporary king, very smilar scenario to when we potted Westley the utter relief when the trapdoor was finally opendoor, did he walk or was he pushed? Doesn't matter he's gone, anyway he is now histrory.
No idea how we will play tonight neither will Sunderland, suspect the Black Cats will make several changes but will we? Hopefully both sides will go on all out attack for a crowd which now will be better that if he had been in charge.

Preston North End 2 Ledson Frokjaer-Jensen Sunderland 0
PNE line-up: Woodman; Storey, Lindsay, Hughes; Potts, Whiteman (Holmes, 69), Ledson, Brady (Greenwood, 58); Frøkjær (Kesler-Hayden, 74), Keane (Osmajić, 69), Riis (Thórdarson, 69). Subs not used: Cornell, Whatmough, Bauer, Best.

Sunderland line-up: Moore; Johnson, Triantis, Hjelde, Anderson; Rigg (Jones, 70), Ekwah; Ba (Bennette, 81), Aouchiche (Watson, 81), Mundle; Rusyn (Semedo, 81). Subs not used: Nna Noukeu, Neil, O’Nien, Hume, Crompton.

Attendance: 7,231 (2,263 Sunderland fans).

Referee: Mr O Yates.

Firstly positives a wins a win albeit against a vastly understrength Sunderland but still a win, might have been different if they had got their efforts on target instead of trying to kill their supporters in the second half(credit to the numbers they brought)
Even ended up playing four at the back for the last 20 or so minutes. Ledson had his best game for ages, Mads as frustrating as ever but he has some class, Potts runs all night, yep won, treble still on.
Also Bauer being a squad number after being ignored by the previous encumbent of the managers seat was also welcome news.

The visitors playing in their traditional colours made 11 changes actually thought they started the better of the two sides should have taken the lead after about 15 minutes good ball in from the left truly awful header by Ba (Mads in the second half was even worse) went wide.
We started to grow a into the game although still looked a bit ropey at the back, a few attacks were mounted came to nothing then a couple of corners caused chaos in the Black Cats defence

The one above Lindsay's effort cleared off the line. Then a miracle happened we located the net, great works by Mads FJ nad Potts down the right, potts ball into the box found the onrushing Ledson who put in an abysmal shot luckily it his a defender and sent Moore the wrong way and boom we are back on our way to world footballing dominance.
Second period thought Sunderland played some decent football looked quick on the break and pressed well but we looked the more likelyand so it proved with about 20 to go, Mads FJ did well to avoid tackles before firing home from 20 yards. Never had the feeling they would come back from that. Could have added others Greenwood's super free kick was header over by Lindsay and at the end Osmajic's shot hit the post
A wins a win but might be slightly when they send the first team in October.

MARSH MUSINGS

Mike Marsh said he “couldn’t be happier” with how his first match in interim charge went, as Preston North End progressed to the second round of the Carabao Cup.

Goals from Ryan Ledson and Mads Frøkjær – who were both brought into the starting XI – earned the victory over Sunderland at Deepdale.

Following the departure of Ryan Lowe on Monday, Marsh has stepped in, with the help of Ched Evans and Peter Murphy, to take over for at least this fixture and Saturday’s match against Swansea City.

Marshy said: “I couldn’t be happier to be fair. It was important that we got a win. We’ve not won for a while, have we?

“Obviously with the circumstances with Ryan leaving, it’s been an emotional couple of days. To come out and play like that, score a couple of goals – and we should possibly have had a couple more – and keep a clean sheet, it just gives everyone a lift.

“I think everyone’s been a little bit low on confidence and to win the game 2-0 [was pleasing]. I know Sunderland had a much-changed team, but we played Salford last year and got knocked out didn’t we, so they’re always difficult games these so I’m delighted.”

Marshy first arrived at the club in December 2021 alongside Ryan Lowe, and the pair have worked together closely for the past two and a half years.

The last couple of days have therefore understandably been difficult for the former Liverpool midfielder, but he was happy to step up to fill the void for at least the interim.

He said: “It’s been really tough. It’s one of the toughest things I’ve had to do. I’m really close with Ryan, I didn’t know Ryan before I came in, but we’ve gotten really close over the past two and a half years and to see him in the situation that he was in, it was understandable that he left.

“We were all emotional yesterday when he said his goodbyes. It’s been a difficult couple of days but Peter’s asked me to stand in and take the team for a couple of games to help him out.

“We’ll take it from there. I’d just like to say from me, the staff, the players that we’ve got nothing but kind words to say about Ryan. He’s been brilliant to all of us and it’s a shame the way it’s ended.”

North End’s second round opponents will be confirmed on Wednesday night and the team will in the meantime turn attentions to the weekend’s trip to Swansea City.

Marshy was on the coaching staff with the Swans a few years back, but will be putting those memories aside when he takes his North End team to South Wales.

He said: “Peter’s asked me to take the team for two games so I’ve definitely got one more, and if we beat Swansea, I might get another one.

“I had a great time at Swansea. I met some lovely people down there. I’ve got some great friends but nothing would please me more than to go down there, turn them over and get three points on the board.”

Their man

Régis Le Bris took heart from his side’s character following tonight’s Carabao Cup exit at Preston North End.

The Frenchman made XI changes from the side that dispatched Cardiff City on Saturday in the Lads’ first game of the Sky Bet Championship season.

Goals from Ryan Ledson and Mads Frøkjær were enough to see off a much-changed Black Cats side, which saw Simon Moore debut in red and white and Pierre Ekwah bank his first minutes since picking up an injury in pre-season.

The 48-year-old also handed a debut to youngster Harrison Jones while fellow Academy graduate Tommy Watson also came off the bench in the second 45.

Speaking to safc.com post-match, Le Bris was quick to reflect on the positives as his much-changed side battled until the last while highlighting the importance of how tonight’s experience will aid their development.

“It was a good opportunity for players who weren’t involved at Cardiff to show their capabilities against a strong team,” he said.

“Preston played with their first team - their strongest team.

“We had good moments and we didn’t give up until the end so, for me, it is good for the mindset of the team.

“We made some mistakes. This kind of team on set pieces is very strong so the mistakes we made caused us to be unbalanced and we conceded goals on these occasions.

“They need experiences to grow so obviously when they play together it is never easy,” he continued.

“Today we had a lack of experience but in the end it is a real opportunity to grow.

“It is a long process when you are talking about the development of the players. We are disappointed because we lost but it is another step towards improvement.”

Preston North End will host Premier League side Fulham in round three of the Carabao Cup.

Marco Silva’s team will come to Deepdale in either the week commencing 16th or 23rd September, with a date and kick-off time to be confirmed.

Fulham made it through to the third round of the competition thanks to a 2-0 victory on the road against League One outfit Birmingham City, whereas PNE secured their spot in the draw with a ruthless 5-0 win over Harrogate Town.

The last time the Cottagers came to Deepdale, Ched Evans was on the scoresheet in a 1-1 draw in November 2021.

A date for this match as well as ticket details will be confirmed in due course.
