Female Doctor Who - spireitematt - 06-12-2014

Steven Moffat has said that a woman will play the Doctor eventually. I think this wrong because the Doctor has always been a man and to cast a woman as the role will turn a lot of fans away. Moffat is ruining Doctor Who with his stupid storylines, plots, ideas and focuses too much on Clara. Its like the Clara Oswald show not Doctor Who. I think what needs to happen is they need to give Doctor Who a rest for a year, keep Capaldi as the Doctor and get new writers.

No reason why we shouldn't have a female Doctor. The Master had changed to the Mistress in this last series without any problems.
I agree though that some new writers are needed. Some of the story lines are now just aimed at being sci fi fantasy rather than adventure.

I don't think it would work as well if they had a female Doctor. It would be like changing James Bond and having Jane Bond. They could create a spin-off of a female Doctor which is related to the Doctor that could work and she could then appear in episodes of Doctor Who alongside the Doctor.

Would you say the same if they decided to have a black Doctor Who?

No I wouldn't.

But I think the show will end before they cast a woman as the Doctor because Moffat and his writing team is ruining it the plots and stories make no sense whatsoever.

I agree that it is now crap but if you accept that Doctor Who can regenerate then there is no reason why he shouldn't become a she.

And I'm not saying that a woman would be good. I haven't liked half the male doctors so there's a chance I wouldn't like a female one. But it should be possible for the doctor to be male, female, black, white, chinese, Indian, or any combination there of!

I think it could possibly work with the right actress and the right plots and storylines but the names which are being banded around for the role wouldn't really work for the part. I mean how can you turn Clara in to the Doctor? She was a Dalek who then became Human.

There are two wonderful female actresses who would be good in the role and they are Jessica Hynes and Olivia Colman.

While the regeneration aspect of the character means he could actually next time round come back as a woman, it would be a huge risk to do so. Haven't watched it since the Peter Davidson days so can't comment on the quality of the writing but for me Doctor Who is a man, the character was written as a man and he is actually a Time Lord, not Time Lady. To me this has nothing to do with being sexist, its just some characters should remain as they were originally intended, and there should be no problem with that. As Matt said, maybe a spinoff version would work, or even introduce a new "Time Lady" within the current Dr Who series as a new character would be better.

Its a bit like other characters down the years, Bond should always be a man, Dorothy should always be a woman and Charlies Angels should always be women, thats the way the character was created. There was the case of the Six Million Dollar Man, a series which saw the introduction of the Bionic Woman with her own series. Murder she wrote was designed for a woman and Inspector Frost was a man, I could not see either of these characters changing sex and being successful.

It could work with the right actress and writers etc but it will upset a lot of people and turn people away from the show which is already happening under Moffat writing it.

Amelia I don't want you to think I'm sexist because I'm not. I believe in equality and Women and Men should be paid the same. I would like to see Yvette Cooper as leader of the Labour party and believe that Women should be allowed to manage Men's football teams.

I'm not taking it as a sexist comment. Thumb up
Unfortunately I think it has run its course already.
I had great hopes for Peter Capaldi but I now think they dropped a clanger by choosing him and the stories are no longer appealing. They ruined it for me when they decided to do a "reveal" show. The Doctor should have been revealed in the storyline as he always is. I don't mind it being a male role. I just think if you accept regeneration, anything is possible.

And don't get me started with what's wrong with Charlie's Angels. Rolleyes
