Is Tiger Roll better than Red Rum? - spireitematt - 07-04-2019

Is Tiger Roll better than Red Rum? The first horse since him to win back to back Grand National but there have been others which have won back to back National's.

The Duke won it in 1836/1837
Abd-El-Kader in 1850/1851
The Colonel 1869/1870
Reynoldstown 1935/1936

Then Red Rum in 1973, 1974 and 1977. Manifesto won it in 1897 and 1899.

The thing is Red Rum won it in 1973,1974 and then came 2nd in 1975 and 1976 before winning it again in 1977. The only way Tiger Roll could top it is by winning it for a 3rd consecutive time.

Red Rum won it on a course with fences that were very different to todays. Those fences back they were seriously higher and had much bigger drop offs on the landing side tha we see today. The fact Red Rum ran the race 5 times in a row and even managed to make it around each time is testament to his ability!!!

That's a good point. Problem is they've lowered the fences quite low now and it means the horses will run even faster before the jump. I think certain fences at Aintree need to be got rid of though and the field of 40 horses needs to be cut down to maybe 28-30. Every year people go on about banning it but racing happens for the majority of the year whether that's steeple chasing or flat racing. If you banned racing then you would have to ban showjumping and cross country events as well.
