Stevenage v Huddersfield Town - Amelia Chaffinch - 26-02-2025 ![]() ![]() The town of Stevenage has existed for a long time but became the first of the New Towns to be chosen in 1946 to meet the demand for housing following World War Two. The New Town Act decreed that towns would either be expanded from existing smaller towns or develop new ones around London. The idea being to replace slums and bombed out homes in London. The towns were to be built following a standard plan (Abercrombie); housing and infrastructure to provide education, health, sports & leisure facilities. The team as we know it now were formed in 1976. They were called Stevenage Borough FC until 2010.
They should have gained promotion to the Football League in 1996 after topping the Conference. However, their ground didn't make the grade. They continued to do well in the Conference. In 2010, they once again finished top of the Conference and this time, they were allowed to move up. It was at this point that they dropped the Borough in their name.
They gained promotion to League One in 2011 via the play-offs.
By the end of the 2014 season, they were relegated back to League Two.
They escaped relegation from the football league in 2020 due to Macclesfield earning a points deduction.
They were promoted back to League One as runners-up in 2023.
They play at Broadhall Way currently known as the Lamex Stadium.
They have a tendency to re-recruit previous managers. Well, two former managers anyway; Graham Westley, who I find particularly unpleasant, has been in situ four times. And the current encumbant, Alex Revell, who is on his 2nd spell as manager.
They're a confused club. They're nicknamed the Boro despite dropping Borough from the name, there's a stag on the badge, and their mascot is a bear.
Also, the Boro Bear needs to be careful as he appears to be doing an Elon Skum style salute. We've only played three times and the results look like this:

Stevenage is home to Nala, a domesticated cat who has freedom of the town. His adventures are chronicled on his facebook page - The Adventures of Nala
He frequents many places. He is the unofficial ticket collector at the station. Be on the lookout for him there if you're arriving by train. He can also be found in the leisure park, Tool Station and Costa. He has a home; he just likes to survey his territory.

RE: Stevenage v Huddersfield Town - Lord Snooty - 26-02-2025 Who's worse then, Carthoss or Bromby? Let's not forget that Bromby signed some right rubbish as well. Young Tyreece for example. He played against us this season and was terrible. RE: Stevenage v Huddersfield Town - WakeyTerrier - 27-02-2025 Stevenage is probably one of the most depressing places I’ve ever visited. Hard to believe it’s 13years since we last played there, on arrival we asked the local copper where is good to drink in Stevenage and his reply was “London” No idea how Town will get on tomorrow, depends if the players can be bothered…playing in that stadium will be an eye opener for many of them. RE: Stevenage v Huddersfield Town - Amelia Chaffinch - 27-02-2025 I don't think that's working. You're probably not bothered. RE: Stevenage v Huddersfield Town - Lord Snooty - 27-02-2025 Can't our club get owt right these days? ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() RE: Stevenage v Huddersfield Town - theo_luddite - 27-02-2025 Nice one AmChaff ![]() I've travelled in many a coach back in the day from Yorkshire and Wolvo to Stevenage. After they parked in what was then an industrial estate and now might be a shopping centre or even the Lamex Stadium just off the A1, we then traipsed back over the A1 to Knebworth Park for some jolly old afternoon and evening sing-a-longs with 10's of thousands of like minded folk we never knew and mostly haven't met since. I never have received my royalties for my part in the live albums that were released afterwards. ![]() Never bothered looking for pub though. A few expensive beers and the 2nd hand (ahem) smoke (cough) from fellow revellers smoking Bill and Ben the Flower Pot Men's friend helped you to relax sufficiently without having to use the portaloos too often. ![]() I see Charlton away is now 12:30pm on the tellybox so that's one less trip to The Smoke I'll be making. 11:00-12:00 is my target time for arriving in Larndan, not my idea of a kick off-time. A 2 hour "breakfast" in a 'Spoons isn't something I'd do up here. Does this help AmChaff? https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/p0kv27qg RE: Stevenage v Huddersfield Town - Amelia Chaffinch - 27-02-2025 Yes, thanks. I've had a crap day today. Everyone and every company is incompetent. RE: Stevenage v Huddersfield Town - theo_luddite - 27-02-2025 Retirement is bliss. Don't have to deal with (anywhere near as many) dickheads that don't follow, read or understand instructions anymore. Take it as soon as you can afford it. Any road, we won't be seeing Tyreese's silky skills this weekend as they've already loaned him out to Colchester. He's slowly getting closer to Ipswich again. Since we sold them Marcus and they sold us Rhodes, they've been laughing at us really, havent they? I second those words RE: Stevenage v Huddersfield Town - Amelia Chaffinch - 27-02-2025 I have been retired for 2 years and ordinarily it's dickhead free but I came across them all today. 2 horrid shoppers, a workman and FedEx. FedEx have toppled Yodel from the top of my most hated courier list. And they've held the position for a long time. |
