How are you all? (This weeks kwiz).

Olympics v Town

Ooooh, all the excitement of British athletes/cyclists getting pipped at the post in Paris by a bunch of Yanks, or Aussies, or Dutch folk with clogs on still going on and the new season sneaks up on us while we we're still waiting for summer to start. I think we might have had 4 days without rain and a few days with temperatures in the 20's. Of course all that rain is still perfect these days for fires to break out on Marsden Moor. How does that work?

When did windsurf boards grow a stick under them? Whether the sail is attached to the board or it's basically a kite (aka kite surfing) how are you surfing when you are riding on an underwater foil?

I'd never be daft enough to try stand on one but for a sport that's measured by opinion, and I don't really agree with that (higher, faster, further please), those kids on the skateboards are amazing. Including the 51 year old kid Andy Macdonald who got whacked on his arse by his own board. Laugh

His own comment summed it up - “If they’re giving away gold medals for whoever has the most fun, I got it wrapped up, right?” and that's exactly what sport should be all about.

Let's not forget Mr. Puncture - Tom Pidock on his mountain bike either. Move over Frenchy, I'm coming through. I've a big bunch of garlic bulbs to deliver. Big Grin

Town head down the A1 to Play-Off nemesis Peterborough on Saturday for a televised game that will at least stop us watching folk run, ride or sail round in circles for a while. Then again .... Huh

Been a fairly quiet late spring on the in's & out's front (see below) but at least we haven't got an inexperienced mad Jock or a Sauer Kraut in charge this season (so far).

Been a fairly quiet late spring on the Town boards too with Wakey keeping us entertained on his German adventure. Thumb up
I take it him and Mizzy have made it home by now?

Let's not get carried away. Brum, Bolton, Blackpool, Wrexham and others aren't going to lie down and play dead this season. Plenty of others will see us as a Cup tie they can win on the day. We've been down here before. For far too long in previous seasons.

On the tellybox

As above, all games this weekend are on something now called Sky Sports+. That's if you live over here. It used to be a Red Button thing, I think. Do you now paint a white cross on the red button to make it work? If you live somewhere else good luck. I've seen some say they've got an EFL Video type subscription again, https://www.htafc.com/news/2024/august/07/how-to-stream-our-2024-25-sky-bet-league-one-fixtures/ though they won't work anymore in the UK either, hopefully the radio version does as they are still charging me for it. No sign of this game being shown in furrin lands but them in furrin lands often have their own 'sauces' for these games.

Latest news

Town have almost, but not quite sold out their ticket allocation. Only £19 for us oldies. A bit more for you adults of a less mature age. Hell you can always sit on Peterborough Station and wait for the Flying Scotsman or some other Puffing Billy to chug through. (No guarantee that any steam services are running this Saturday). Just sitting on the station might be more entertaining than the football. Just saying. It would have been last season.

We've also had a new paint job done aroud the turnstiles at The Cowshed End. You'll get the chance of a proper butchers next Saturday.

New stadium?

Another club with high hopes, they've got high hopes, they got high apple pie in the sky hopes ..... even with new owners.

https://www.theposh.com/club/stadiums/embankment-stadium

This one's been dragging on since 2020. The plan is to move to a patch of scorched earth on the other side of the River Nene and spin the pitch round about 80° so it faces north-southish instead of east-westish. It's a race to see whether Posh or Luton can drag the new stadium thing out the longest before either of them abandons the plan.

Not sure if that relatively new stand actually replaced the new ground thing, but the new stadium thing is still on their website. That link above also gives you a link to their own view of their current ground.

The booze, the views and the feed yooze.

As usual I'll just paste a link rather than copy and paste someone else's efforts.

By the way, I stumbled across this website for those well travelled lot amongst us (and those hoping to become more well travelled).

Keep your 92 Club tally up to date and save counting grounds on your fingers and thumbs. Thumb up

Out Injured/Suspended/Isolating

In case you missed it, Radino Balker broke his ankle in the friendly with Harrogate, so we won't see him until the New Year. Mr. Bojangles is also injured. Whay aren't I surprised?

Back training but not oven ready/Back in the frame

Should be a full squad to pick from otherwise.

Musical Interlude

I may have said this before ....
I may very well say it again .... sometime in the not too distant future.

Two abiding memories of our Play-off Final v Posh at Old Trafford.

1. It rained just before kick-off walking from a pub where we couldn't get in to get served. Typical of Manchester rain, it hammered you into the ground. You may have seen the water feature they have since installed at Old Trafford.
[Image: 1_Manchester-United-v-Arsenal-FC-Premier-League.jpg]

2. The free t-shirts that rained down from the upper tier to the lower tier at the final whistle after Leak Lark (see what I did there?) got out-thunk and out-played in the middle of our "unbeaten" run. Couldn't have been proper Town fans. When does a Yorkshire bloke, or lass, throw away anything they've been given for free?

So where better to start with a dubious link to a game at London Road than with a toon by a guy from that ther Larndan?

Click "Watch on YouTube" if necessary.

That geetarist ain't bad either Smile

Andy Bell of Erasure hails from these here parts,

Here they are ( or he is) playing with Level 42

Paul Nicholas sang and performed in just about every West End musical of his time and made some forgettable songs that grandma's army at a grandma's party managed to push into the Top 20, or at least onto TOTP. I'll save you the embarassment of having to explain to any listening teenager what that racket was all about.

.... and then there's Washboard Hank ...

Ooops! He's from Peterborough, Ontario. Oh well Whistle

Don't ever say I don't try to broaden your horizons on these threads. Tongue

Last time out

We got relegated and they lost to Oxford who got promoted.

Let's move on shall we? Nothing to see here.

The Sack Race

Well since we were last here, kind of around the beginning of spring, some of them there revolving doors have been spun right off their bearings. So the summary (if only it were summery) goes a bit like this.

May 2024

[Image: S1kT9ne.jpeg] [Image: 7OwiTMi.jpeg]

June 2024

[Image: j9mORfN.jpeg] [Image: uMfRZyd.jpeg]

July 2024

Let's not forget an honourable mention to our Gareth, who took England to places they had only been to once or twice before and he jumped ship before the FA could offer him a new contract and sack him in December. Thumb up

Let's also not forget it's only a matter of time before Fergie's lad moves out for Grant McCann to take over again too.

Innies and Outies

Just to jog Wakey's memory, as he's been away for so long and he might have missed it ....

It's not ? it's Barrow

I doubt it's done and dusted. The Prima Donna's don't let their kids out of their play pens to play in League 1 too early and I don't doubt someone (or someone's) will end up elsewhere too. August 30th is deadline day.

For Posh, in addition to losing top scorer Mason-Clark who they sold to and loaned back from Coventry for a big chunk of his transfer fee, Posh's 2nd top scorer Jonson Clarke-Harris decided to leave on a free to sign for Rothrerham, so that's a combined 32 goals they have to find from somewhere this season. They've also been having a bit of a clearout at the back to bring some more cash in.

Played for us.

Peterborough have two former Town keepers (Bilokapic and Jed Steer, who was on loan to us from Villa) and Romoney Critchlow in the back four. That said he's available for transfer. Might have to change my Posh scorer.

What do the odds say?

By the end of last season, Transfermarkt had Posh down as having the most highly valued League 1 squad at 22 million (Euro's or Pounds, it's all relative). This season they have Town at 21 million and Brum are twice that. Everyone else is way below that.

So given that club budgets will fall somewhere in line (if not value) with that table, and the bookies apparently have some insight into club budgets, they set their starting odds for winners and losers not a million miles fom those numbers. That's before we all put our two bob on Town to go up.

So why would they be putting Rotherham in the odds to go up/win the League above us?

Well maybe it's because they expect a certain Jonson Clarke-Harris to score a bagful of goals for them. Not sure Rotherham have fixed that leaky defense though. I haven't checked yet.

For this game Posh are slight favourites, because they are at home and we are normally pish on the first day of the season. Fair do's.

In other odds I'd say there's a high chance of us wearing the red and black shirts on Saturday. Can't play that as a Badger though.

They can't all win

Take your starters for 10 from this lot.
From those coming down, Brum are at home to Reading, Rotherham have a long trip to Exeter.

From those that didnt go up in the play-off's, Posh play us (obvs), Barnsley kick the seaon off against Manfield and Bolton go to the Far East of London, Leyton Orient.

Of those up and coming clubs, Stockport are home to Cambridge, Wrexham (expect them to get a lot of TV coverage) are home to Wycombe, Mansfield (already covered) and Crawley are home to Blackpool.

Not seen any odds yet regarding the number of points Reading will get deducted this season.

We've played 'em before

We've only played each other 27 times before, but we keep meeting in play-off's, and losing, hence the bit of needle between us. Of course having two shy, quiet retiring chaps like Darragh MacAnthony and Barry Fry in charge of the club, and Fergie's son as Manager, kind of ramps up the rhetoric a tad.

Next up?

We've an EFL Cup game on Tuesday v Morecambe and we open our home League account next Saturday against Stevenage.

Pressers

Duff - - Duff - Duff - Duff, Duff,Duff,Duff,Duff and Hoggy hogs the mic.

The editing is still crap, Hoggy at 05:11, Duff-Duff at 38:09. It also won't work emedded.

The views from The Bridge on The River Nene

That 22 million (€/£?) squad is currently valued at below 10 million and it hints they are cutting their cloth a little finer this season after missing out on promotion. MacAnthony does nothing to dispell that.

Fergie's lad says they'll still attack

https://www.peterboroughtoday.co.uk/sport/football/peterborough-united/peterborough-united-manager-promises-another-attacking-extravaganza-plus-team-news-and-new-signing-hints-4731897

Let's hope we put a lot more big onions full of wind in that big onion bag this season, for a change.

Nice one, theo.

This match clashes with the Modern Pentathlon, so might have to give PishPosh a miss. Whistle

Been through Peterborough a few times on the train and been on the periphery once or twice with work, but never into it. Take it I'm not missing much!

Although if anyone here fancies chancing their arm, not far outside of Peterborough- about 30miles give or take- king John's convoy was heading north and decided to take a short cut through the floodplains to get to their destination. Now these floodplains are proper dry land used for farming and probably houses now. But back then they were treacherous and susceptible to heavy flooding and tidal shifts. His convoy obviously didn't understand the tidal patterns and only got part way across when the tide got them. Did I mention that historical records suggest there could have been a violent storm and or heavy fog at the same time. It can't be exactly accurate, but both occured at a similar time to when he is believed to have crossed.

Anyways, whilst he was crossing, they lost a lot of luggage, people and probably horses, some of the luggage lost were coins and other more luxurious items a king would have, one of the boxes however was supposedly housing the old crown jewels and has never been found since...

It is believed that somewhere within an area of the dried up wash, so really between Peterborough and the wash itself, and east Anglia and Lincolnshire going t'other way, is a box underneath a few hundred years of sediment, with an old gold crown with old jewels etc. value is priceless, the British museum/national history museum are thought to be willing to pay 100's of millions in finders fee alone for just the crown.

If anyone has a few hours before kickoff and has a shovel or gone down on a JCB!

As an aside, king John died of dysentry weeks to a few months after. So if anyone does seriously have interest in it, then there is a rough time frame and approximate area. People have looked and are looking, it's featured on a TV show I watch too but as yet the only thing found has been coins, but they do date to that time period.

They need to get some of those Aussie Gold Hunters in Laugh

Watching some of the QPR v WBA game on this new Sky Sports+ channel, a big improvement over the Red Button thing they used to do is they do replays (particularly the goals) during the game. So if you just happened to get distracted, like by reading this thread for example, you don't have to wait for the highlights to come up on terrestial channels on Sunday morning (ITV 4, 09:00 on Sunday this week). Alternatively if you don't go out late (or much) these days, 21:00 ITV 4 tonight - Saturday, repeated at 23:55 on ITV1 if you suffer from insomnia.

RE: Posh v Town's Duff Duffs - 10/08/2024 - WakeyTerrier - 10-08-2024

We’re back Theo, had a great four and a half weeks out in Germany apart from watching England and the very poor transport system..trust me, I won’t slate our trains again.

Not sure what to expect today, we normally don’t do that well at London Road or whatever they call it these days. I’d take a point now but more importantly I want to see a plan.

From what I’ve seen of preseason Evans looks a good signing and we at last have someone who looks dangerous when we have a free kick just outside the box. Our lack of pace at centre back still worries me though.

RE: Posh v Town's Duff Duffs - 10/08/2024 - theo_luddite - 10-08-2024

Good to know you made it back. Thumb up What with a dodgy Deutsche Bahn service (have they become incompetent by learning from owning some of our incompetent train sets?) and a Microsoft supplier wiping out other transport networks across Europe, I was wondering if you'd have had to thumb a lift back or join the queue for a small boat ride back to Dover.

RE: Posh v Town's Duff Duffs - 10/08/2024 - WakeyTerrier - 10-08-2024

I think we managed 1 train that set off and arrived on time in the whole time we were there. Lucky for us that was our 4hr journey from Düsseldorf to Berlin. On other occasions we weren’t as lucky, we had a trip to Bonn one day that set off on time and then got later and as it went down the line eventually stopping somewhere near Bonn but it just stopped with no explanation, no phone signal so I couldn’t work out how to get to Bonn from the station we were at so we just came back. Apparently the train just sat there for an hour. We were probably 95% of the way there.
You heard stories of trains setting off back to Düsseldorf from matches in Gelsenkirchen and half way back the driver would pull into a station and abandon the train because it was overcrowded, this happened on more than a couple of occasions.
